No such thing as a junk 10/22. That is a fantastic gun!
Well the one I used the receiver from had sat under a couch in a buddies rental for years. And the bolt was beyond salvage. The other one was run over by a four wheeler, split stock and broke receiver. But yes they are great guns.

Honestly my winter prep involved thinking about where I'm gonna put them when it starts to get cold out. Then going to South Florida for 3 weeks...
Came back to frozen stuff. 20 deg
New and learning...

Adding some snow support. Individual snowfalls are generally not a problem even big ones. The problem comes later in the year when the snowpack is deep and starts to settle. The worst time is usually spring when the faceted snow at the base melts away leaving the upper snowpack unsupported. If a few dense canopy conifers are placed together too tightly the snow doesn't even reach the ground and all the weight is taken by the trees. I've learned to recognize trouble spots and sensitive branches and crowns, this little bit of support is probably all I need. Might add a little more next weekend if it hasn't snowed a bunch by then. image.jpgRolled out the dog fence too. I do a lot of dog sitting over the winter in my yard. Once the trees disappear under the snow dogs tend to romp around over them breaking branches etc.. The big trees in the wood chip mulch probably don't need the support and fencing, hopefully. image.jpg

Get your self a BB gun of the gas or pump powered version. A well placed shot will solve your privileged rat problem. Maybe your not so good a shot? A little practice and you will be.
Man after my own approach.

I'm lazy as a river. I storage all my trees (8 trees I know) at Hidden Garden Bonsai. Fair price with experienced care taker. Weeks out before winter I apply several applications of fungicides to my trees.

So far mild here, Bald Cypress and Willow still in deep water trays partially frozen. They seem to thaw frequently though...

Our Temps are pretty similar right now. this bald cypress doesn't seem to wanna go dormant even though it's been through about 2 months of 32° every night in my cold frame. 20161212_084537.jpg 20161212_084531.jpg

That is odd for a bald cypress.

A little freezing rain on my large Japanese maple this morning. This one is a real challenge to move, and it is now in a north facing garden bed ready to be thoroughly mulched over, since it is supposed to get to 9F one night later this week.20161212_035023.jpg

Maybe it'd need some time of being kept outside to go dormant and store it
for winter safely. Just a thought.
My funny BC was exposed to cold, shed needles and then was mulched in the garden. Four years with me, SFSG.

here's how a differnt guy in my club does it. also looks nice, he said he doesn't have mice issues, of course I had to ask. There is yet another gentleman in my club who I have spoken to about this topic, and he does a different method. he dug down 4 ft deep "below the frost line" and has a "pit" which sounds super fancy and nice and stores his trees down there covered with a bunch of peat moss, and mouse poison. I haven't posted mine, as im a little worried about it.. going with a different method than I did last year, last year I jsut buried the pots in my garden bed totally exposed to wind.. didn't loose a single one, but had quite a bit of unwanted animal pruning. supposed to down to negative 4 with 20 mph winds here in the next 24-48 hours, but we got about 8 inches last night.. and now its all melting, then it will be 4 degrees at about midnight......
