Here in the middle Atlantic states down into the southern U.S. wisteria is an invasive destructive weed. It grows wildly here. If it is planted near a structure, it will eventually tear the structure down. The further north you go, the slower this plant grows and it has to be coaxed and coddled up north.
Around here, all you have to do to get a vine is throw a piece pruned off a larger one into the woods and wait. BIG pieces will root with no problem, given dense rich topsoil, moisture and a little heat.
I always find it amusing when people actually grow these on purpose from seeds or buy seedlings...as said before, those take a decade or even two to produce flowers....but I can go out and dig big ones up...These are growing under my parking deck at work. There are a hundred more under there...
