Has anyone made a pot out of 1x6 inch boards? Will wood stain harm the bonsai?

Yes, but I've never stained them. I believe most stains are water based now days but I could be wrong. If they're water based then no they won't do anything to the plant.

Sure, its cheap, make any size you want and stain it! Just don't want the stain to kill the tree.

Well, it seems some are water based and some are oil based with mineral spirits. Even if you use the oil based product, as long as you let it dry thoroughly and don't stain the inside I would think there wouldn't be a problem. Maybe someone has experienced issues in the past and will chime in.

For precautionary reasons, I'll only paint the outside with water base stain and sealer.

I build or repurpose a lot of wooden boxes as training pots....Use real wood not plywood, it rots in about a year ask me how I know.
