One of my favorite times for trees is when they just break their buds. Some pics of my shohin sitka spruce breaking bud.

*Edit* The title should say breaking buds, not breaking bubs..lol:D

This is one of my favorite trees on this forum. Thanks for sharing, it is becoming a great bonsai.

Yours is a really nice one, I think you've just helped me identify a tree of mine i've been trying to identify for years. I thought it was a hemlock but I believe it is this species now. :)

Really growing well that one. Sweet buds, my favorite time of the year as well. Thanks for the look!

Those look like some really great bubs to me. Great tree, I really like it a lot. Most trees have buds but this one has bubs, more personal than buds. Do you have to wear golves to wrestle with this one. I remember the Sitkas in Alaska being like barbed wire. Incidentally; I found out when we were in Alaska that Sitka Spruce buds make a great beer, we tried it and it was great----This bub's for you---- sorry I just had to take another shot.

Thanks Beng.. Rough stock pre spruce bonsai material of this quality seems to be a rare thing. You should post of pic of your hemlock. I would like to see it.

Thanks Brian, Jason and NY. I will do my best to keep posting quality trees.:D

Thanks Vance. Your reply had me laughing for a few minutes. Actually, the foliage is not too rough. Like you said, in regards to some spruces out there, it is like trying to style a porcupine..lol

Interesting about the buds and beer. About mid summer, I might have enough cut and pinched buds for one glass of beer... Cool, refreshing shohin yamadori spruce beer. Has a nice ring to it.;)

Found a pic of mines needles I took about a week ago. Originally the tip buds looked like yours, now they've extended a bit. Can you tell if its a spruce or hemlock from these? image.jpgimage.jpg

Hmmm. At first, I thought that your tree is not a spruce. I do not really have experience with hemlock, so it is tough for me to say. The buds look very similar though. I don't know if this helps, but here is my tree before the work was done. Does yours look like this. I think your initial thought that it is a hemlock, might be correct. I think Victrinia has some experience with hemlock. She might be able to identify it. Maybe grouper52 as well. I believe they work with hemlock in their part of the country.

Thanks, I was afraid you might be offended I am so happy you have as good a sense of humor as a sense of art. I was serious about the beer too. It seems that back in the 17th Century Captan Cook was in the area, needed a source of Vitamins C because of an outbreak of Scurvy on board ship and that's where the brewing of Spruce bud Beer came from. There is only one brewery making the stuff and they can't make enough to export elsewhere in the lower 48 so you will have to go to Skagway to try it. Not that making a trip to Alaska is not worth the trip on its own merit, the Beer is a nice touch. It's kind of Yamadori heaven up there.

Mines not that far out yet its a slow spring. Will try to get some better overall pics and tighter foliage pics and post a thread. Thanks your tree looks great. How long do you let the shoots grow before pruning back?

I vote spruce too. -- Ben, does it backbud? Everything I've heard is that hemlock doesn't backbud hardly/if at all.

Great tree as always Rob :) We have mostly Engelmann in my area, and Black Hills (white spruce) not to far north; I really like them both so far.

I looked at your pics again and I see quite a few "backbuds." I vote even more strongly for spruce now...lol

Very nice tree! looks good and healthy too. I would give your left arm for that tree. :)
