This Juniper was collected 20 years ago, and put in a box. Some Kishu was grafted onthe back, but it was never styled. There’s also a root graft.

Twenty years later, it was finally potted. The box pretty much fell apart.

Yesterday, it began it’s training.

The “ live vein” on the the trunk in the picture above is dead.

So, I spent a couple hours cleaning the life line, removing the old bark. Then 5 approach grafts of Kishu were applied:

The back:

From the back, you can see the clump of shimpaku foliage on the left. It got a hard cut back after being left to grow unattended for 20 years.

Going back to the front, the height of the future tree will be about where the foliage of all the grafts is. So the new foliage will all cascade down. All the old Utah will either be jinned or just cut off.

We estimate it’s 650 to 750 years old.

Nice looking tree, Adair. I know you’ll do a great job with it. Is it on its native roots, or were Keisha roots grafted on as well?

Okay this is getting weird.:confused::eek:

Firstly let me say, that I admire Sifu and Scott for their training.

BUT ------- you change the foliage and,----- then change the roots?

Then this is an amazing Phoenix Graft.

So the objective was the big chunk of ancient wood ?

Did you collect this tree or did you purchase it?

Yes, Chicago1980,

it did not die, nor was it a piece of deadwood with live wood re-attached.
Hence the amazing Phoenix Graft comment.

As Giga put it ------------- sex change.

There are native roots, and some grafted on roots. That stub on the left is the remainder of the root graft tree. I don’t know what species that was. There’s a tiny bit of live foliage with juvi foliage still on it.

Not a Phoenix graft.

This is actually a very common practice.

And, yes, doing this DOES increase the value! Lol!!

Are the five grafts , assuming they all take , all you think you’ll need to build a new canopy on this particular trunk ? Or did you put five hoping to get 3 , etc. ?

Amazing Sifu,

I am afraid to try that, the closest I could come to an effort is taking a small
leaf citrus and fusing it to a root resistant to our soil microbes.
Not as attractive as your work.

Hats off to you.
Thanks for taking the time to show.
Good Day
