I originally dug this tree from the neighbors yard about 10 years ago since it was not doing well in their yard and seemed to be on the verge of death. I transplanted it into our yard and hoped it would do better. Between deer eating it during the winter, and it probably not getting enough light in the summer, it did not do well in my yard either. So, naturally, I decided to tr to turn it into a bonsai. Five years ago, I potted it into an empty cat litter bucket in pure Turface and moved it to a sunnier location. It languished in the bucket until this year when it took off and has put on more growth and greener growth than it has ever done. It has even done some back budding off the trunk right where I hoped to have a branch. YAY!!
My plans are to let it put on growth this year and repot it next year into a smaller container. Roots are air pruning where they are escaping from the drain holes in the bottom of the bucket. I probably will not pot it into a pot of final size, but smaller than it is in now. The last photo is what I envision for the future of this tree if I can continue to get more back budding.

Looks beautiful. I like Thujas. I always wondered how they look when taking away their characteristic christmas tree shape. That's how they grow here in Europe.

The back budding looks promising.
