What is your potting mix? It looks very heavy on the organic side and everything I have read and used suggests a well drained, coarse, inorganic mix. I used a 50:50 mix of pumice and haydite, misted and watered the tree several times a day at first then backed off a bit later on. The mix is full of nice white roots now and the tree grew new foliage this summer. Hopefully will make it through this crazy winter and bud out like crazy next spring.

I know. About 80% of the pot is filled with lava, pumice, bark Bonsai soil. I ran out just at the very top so i used some of the old soil to cover up some of the exposed roots. It did SO well in the organic stuff last year i figured it wasn’t the worst decision in a pinch. Not too happy about it but it should be fine.

I find yews are iffy with teir roots. Barerooting they do not normally really like. And it is really early in the year, especially considering you are in zone 4.

Still, good to know. Hopefully I didn’t hack mine too bad.
Hoping it survives this winter. If so it Will mark one year in the planter.

All of the yew's I collected with Ron (80+) are barerooted and potted. From the 20 I collected myself 2 died. 1 potted in bad soil and 1 started too early with fertilizer. So bare rooting them isn't a problem, when you are doing it at the right time. My soil mix is 50% akadama, 50% pumice and a little hand of cutting soil in training pot, when I switched to a bonsai pot a leaf the cutting soil. https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/i-dont-like-yew.31001/
