So, I picked up this yew at a local nursery back in January. I don’t know which type of yew it is, but thought with the winter colour it might be Japanese. It was a bargain, as I got it in the off season, and I was surprised at how the trunk was compared to the others around it. Took these pictures, but you can’t really tell what’s going on with all the foliage.

It does look like Taxus cuspidata 'Nana', the dwarf Japanese yew. I have had one next to a small pond for about 20 years and mine does not get that off color very much at all.

Repotted it last night. My first real repot, where I took a tree out of the nursery can and put it into a bonsai pot. It took over 3 hours, although I’m sure that it took that long due to my lack of experience. The soil level in the nursery can was just above the first fork, and it took quite a while to work down through all the roots to get to the flare in the trunk you can now see. The soil is the Boon mix from Superfly. Now it’s time to let it recover, and see if it’s doing well enough in the fall to start cleaning it up.
