Found this gem of a Taxus in the garden centre yesterday, went back for it today. At 20% off the asking price I couldnt resist anymore.
I say gem because I didnt have to do much to uncover the sweet nebari, it was just there, in my face, yelling at me to take it home!
Plenty of bones on the tree and seemingly very healthy n lush green foliage. I did not the odd scale insect tho, so ill get some spray.
I wont do any root work until spring, no need. Ive killed so many of these, the only one that ever survived I actually worked the roots at the end of Aug.

@leatherback knows
would you say it looks healthy enough to work over autumn, with wire etc? no root work.

Im going to try something similar to this Simon temblett Yew, but less 'paddy' and less main stems, mine will have a more defined, singular, tapered trunk line.
similar starting material.
this yew is one ive always admired, i even messaged Simon on FB in 2019 when i had another similar yew and he sent the photo of what he started with above. in the box

Cheers mate,
here's a close up of the defined trunk line. can see how it tapers off from the base...
most left side branches will be brought down to horizontal and swooping, the thicker stem on right will have movement put in, but the secondaries off that will be brought horizontal. there is a branch at the front that will be brought up so that the tree isnt so open from the front, thats never a natural look but these are early beginnings.
the base is also wider under the soil.
thats it for the deadwood for time being.

Real nice base on that one, Bobby. Looks like it will be another great tree of yours. I like the styling of your inspiration tree but I'm not a big fan of the long straight, pointy jins. Otherwise, I think it's a nice direction for this one.

Fair point about the jins, in the final pot image the jins are less obvious with quite a bit of foliage covering them, maybe you was referring to the training box photo.
thanks for your input tho.
I feel mine may just have the one down the middle and one beside it eventually. so bit more subtle

Ive been adding bits of wire, even though I said id wait🙃

Ive been setting basic primary lines, not much detail wiring of finer shoots though. Ive left quite a bit more branches than ill eventually need for now. Ive been doing this wiring in spurts to see how the tree reacts, so far so good, can definitely leave it alone now and hope it doesnt stress too much

Gorgeous start to this yew. Do they backbud well? I’ve never worked with one, mostly out of fear that the dog would chew up a branch or the kid swallow a handful of berries.

Only the female ones produce berries, love to get my hands on a lady one! They back bud profusely, see the buds already emerging from the main trunk on this one. It will go mad come spring.

Youve now inspired me to go and look at some yews Ive been ground growing for a few years and maybe lift a couple and pot them - would you suggest autumn or spring for lifting them?

Id say, experiment, I plan to repot this one at the end of July, going on what Potter says here

Harry harrington has been doing conifer work since Aug, have a look on his pages

Ive repotted them at the end of Aug with success and ive also killed many. I mean, taxus is readily available here eh, its sold as hedging in any garden centre or tree nursery for pretty cheap. Which is why I say experiment. I would say though, dont do top and bottom in the same season. apart from that, experiement and have fun.
