Yew's dropping inner needles- is it even bad?

I got this tree toward the end of the growing season last year, and just kept it until a couple of weeks ago, when I bare rooted half of it.

It's pushing out a lot of new growth, but as you can see in the pics there are a few needles on the interior that appear to not be getting enough sunlight.

Aside from pruning to allow for more light penetration, what can I do about this? I'm not even sure I want to be doing any pruning, because my understanding of yews is that they're very fickle, and I'm trying to help it recover asap.

Yews will shed any needles not getting sufficient light. Yours looks pretty normal.
