While trying to establish good roots ("probably not long enough"), I had small maples ("too small") in potting soil over a year buried to near first branches. As can be seen in the pictures, the brown trunk sections seem to be a decent color transition to the roots. If these trees and others are still alive 7 - 50 years down the road, is this same green to brown transition line going to become a hard and fast line rather than as it is now more of a transition to the green. Will it be so distinct later as to become a bad focal point in the "bonsai".
