Into the grow bed!
Had 12 Zelkova layers to put into the grow bed. They had really good roots despite only being in the pots for 5 weeks from stumps.Would of grown much more, but I was pouring water on them with a 4 ph very acidic. My rainwater is good, but after adding the dyna grow it plummeted. So micro nutrient disorders and over fertilization I believe stunted growth. After I ph’d the water I had new fresh growth in as little as 5 days sprouting all over! Lesson learned 🙃
They will bounce back nicely in ground and should have trunks nearing 2” in Spring 2021.
I planted a couple little layers in middle of 2018 and the trunks on them two are just over an inch already! Ready to see the roots in Spring.Hopefully stretched the base out a little bit.
Going to prune roots yearly on these.
They are all on inverted saucers.
Will put black plastic down in a few days to tidy up and keep out weeds.

Fantastic thread! I've just read your earlier Zelkova broom thread and this one. Took a while... :) but it was time well spent. Inspiring and very informative, thank you for documenting everything! And glad your are back in bonsai after your pause! Thanks to your great work I have taken a liking to start a few Zelkovas too. I ordered 60 seeds from myseeds.co. What do you think about germinating the seeds in these jiffy pellets?

my pines are doing great starting early indoors though!
I am excited about them and it seems worth the time.

Do you have a thread about these pines too? I started JBPs this spring

Hi,I have actually made a couple threads.
You will probably like this one the best ,it shows how I germinated Pines and also I’ve taken a Growers Course too sincet he brooms and cuttings thread.I must admit ,I feel I am a better grower now since the brrooms and cuttings thread.
Lots of good jbp in this thread...I prefer seedling cuttings now.

Thanks!

fwschumacher has freshest seed.It sprouted in a week for me without pretreatment. 1400 seeds for 15$!
Thanks!

Thank you, I'll read it soon!
I tried schumacher, but they don't ship to Europe. Tried sheffields too, for a $10 pack of seed they charge something around $50 shipping! :D So I stick to my previous seed stores, whatcomseeds and myseeds, they germinated very well this spring (JBP and trident maple).
Keep up the the great work. It is cool to have such good source of information, like your threads!

Trying to rock some pauls scarlet hawthorne in the aeroponic cloner....I can get zelkova rooting in them.....new science to me,but worth the effort.
If you can get an aeroponic cloner dialed in they can do amazing things.....Here is a recipe where someone gets roots in 4 days(pictures)

Oh god, the best bonsai nut material!

I have 4 seedlings of Zelkova Serrata, if you want I can take photos of her, my intention is to make brooms like you. It is my favorite style but I still do not have knowledge!!

Greetings from Madrid

I don't know if we're allowed to share these. If not, thanks to the moderators to delete.

Here are some tips for growing Zelkova, from a French short-lived magazine in the late 1990s, most of its content translated form a Japanese publication. The photos speak for themselves :

The Super Sprouter I bought works awesome!
https://www.amazon.com/Super-Sprouter-Deluxe-Propagation-Light/dp/B06ZY5SWRX/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1528233462&sr=8-1&keywords=super+sprouter+deluxe+propagation+kit+w/+7"+dome+&+t5+light
The optional heat mat thermostat is awesome...if no thermostat,do not use heat mat!

And a simple light timer

Remove branches from the stock plant to accommodate an 8” cutting and IMMEDIATELY put cut end into water tub.should be slightly woody or semi- ripe at base.
Big cuttings are way better!!!! Big as can fit in the tall propogator.
Moisten the JIffy Pellets and gently squeeze excess water from them
Give them holes
Prepare harmone
Take cuttings a good 8” long, remove bottom three sets of leaves or so,cut with a very sharp, new razor blade on 45 degree angle 3/16” below a node, then moisten with water.
Dip the end into harmone, all that will be buried.
stick into moist JIffy Pellet
After you get a few done put into propagator and mist.
Keep vents closed and mist twice or more a day.
No need to water, just mist twice a day to dome walls and all.And so a little bit of bottom channels have some puddles of water.
Very high humidity is key.
GIVE 18 hours light!!!

The JIffy Pellets are the way to go!
I got crazy roots in 11 days, the roots grow out the Jiffy’s and down.
I let them go till’ there are roots everywhere.

Sorry for the shopping list, but I am having awesome results with this method!
Big cuttings are always better!
I will post mine soon, they are phenomenal.
What hormone did you use for rooting hoping to emulate this myself and also if ok to ask when is best to start cuttings I'm in Indiana usa and could use advise ty planning on doing with zelkova serrata

@cmeg1 absolutely amazing rooted and air layered plants , so excited for spring . any thoughts if taking dormant cuttings of zelkova serrata i have (goshiki- a variegated one ) if dormant winter suttings in a cloner machine would even work or would be kinda pointless or no chance and wait til spring flush or even summer hardened or semi hardened wood. definitely want at least one of your zelkova serrata in your rock wool photos more after smaller the better . the root systems on yours are phenomenal , but i suspect you know that all too well but truly your posts are so encouraging to see what people are able to do with plants . sorry if i should made seperate post just hoped your direct imput and wanted to also complimet you since inspiring .

The best secucess with zelkova is on a heatpad at 75f with a dome on a 10x20 tray.
One small t5 flourescent……either stonewool or jiffy pellets………hormex powder/clonex gel/dip &grow all work good….about 11 days till root.

The secret is take the semi ripe cuttings (late spring) or when shoots are past the succulent phase and before they turn to wood….

ALSO TAKE THE CUTTING AT THE VERY END OF THE LIGHT CYCLE AS THEY ARE FULL OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC ENERGY……..This energy depletes to the trunk and roots quickly when the lights are off and if you wait till morning.

This will make rooting 50% quicker.
