I picked this one up over the weekend, cost me £65-$82
its probably worth a little more now after the work done, but just in the basic stages

its been produced from an airlayer, the radial spread is very good.
a little leggy, i had a good look and cut it right back then defoliated. i know this is safe to do with zelkova, plus the pot is bursting with feeder roots, its been in this pot a while and lifts right out as compacted rood pad.

there is a few rough pruning cuts, these were just nibbled at with knob cutters. when wounds are a certain size i dont bother with big slabs of cut paste, i think it looks ugly.
i made hollows out of the bigger wounds then i stain so that everything pretty much blends in right away, note how the hollow blends in with the hollow that was already present at the top of the trunk

will see how it responds to the cut back n defoliation.will be fed n watered well and left to grow out a few weeks before cutting back.could do with letting the low branches run a little.this will be very nice in a few years if i decide to keep it.

Do you have much experience with how long it takes the air layered roots to approach a natural look?

no idea mate. there is plenty of threads on here that show that though, think Mach5 has projects like that, just do some research:)

regarding air layers im a newbie, only ever tried one and that failed!

the spooky english elm that i sold Conar dash, was layered off. have a look at the roots on that, pretty good and getting better.

it's looking much more respectable than when you got it - those bulges were an eyesore.
YOU DA MAN.

yeh each time i looked at it i felt it needed smoother lines.removing the first left branch allowed me to nibble away at the bulge there. then a few other areas

the left sub trunk could be reduced slightly to a shoot further back so it goes up n out rather than up n in. cutting out that knobble in the process

Zelkova is on my wish list to get :) The two left side leaders will need a lot of growing out to thicken. It will help the wounds from the transition chops heal faster too. I'd say it was very good candidate for the twice yearly shearing method.

yep, its now approaching a point where it can be left to grow out and sheared back. i use the method to an extent, but because i keep them on the balcony im a little restricted to have everything looking like large bushes all at once. the extensions on this one were allowed to get to half a ft before i trimmed back, twice now its had a good clean out.
i might get it looking nice and sell this one, so basically just been working on tidying it up.

Yeah I forgot about that - must be a PITA when you have to grow sacrifices. I just like the Autumn colours and winter image is nice. I have a sort of similar tree but it's an English Elm with a face lol.

yeh i usually wire the ends of sacrifices so they go straight up, which helps. its the spring flush which i use to my advantage, had hornbeams and zelkova with 2ft plus branches a few weeks ago before cutting back.
in a smaller space, air flow can also be an issue, so i use partial defoliation a bit too.
if i decide to put this in the ground for a season, the transitions would improve big time. so good to have that option
