I need a place to post my zelkovas' progress.
Just going to post some updates on defoliations and also some small progressions.

First off here is a small progression of a tree just over two years old,zelkova#11.
It starts in 2013 and ends in it's most recent defoliation.

Here is one that is growing back in after defoliation,zelkova#1.
A before and after.
Really be fun getting some wire on this one in the fall.I think I will be happy with it next year.Should be able to get another defoliation this year too.

Thanks! I need more of these little guys.I only have four of them, but I am going to air layer the tops of all my cuttings in the ground here in a few days.
I will make a post of it all.

Nice result. Keep up the good work.
Thanks,Dirk!
I have cuttings in a propagater too.Just in case I need more plants,I just made 5 rather small air layers as a backup to have something ready to go in spring.
These small trees are kind of cool because I can start building ramification as early as the second growing season.

Just made these 5 air layers.
I had some cuttings I planted in the growing bed last autumn. So some of them I am using for small forest type or maybe some more brooms after I chop them off.
The rest of the cuttings in the bed maybe some bigger trees.

Well,if everything goes as planned these little guys will have a start to a nice Nebari.

Defoliated this one a couple weeks ago.I am fertilizing very heavy a slow acting fert. After it gets some density this season with another defoliation, it should be nice when it gets wire in autumn.
I like the way the foliage looks when it is time to cut back.

Very nice work cmeg! All looking really nice and thanks for sharing your progression. I have one broom Zelkova I got from Don last year and enjoying it very much. How many of these do you have now?

Thanks,Mach5.I started with ten trees, but have only 4 now that are keepers. What can I say:rolleyes: I wish I had all of them. The good news is I just potted 7 little cuttings and hopefully will be defoliating next year.Going to go for some different shapes.

For the life of me I have not been able to get a single Zelkova seed to sprout since the two years I started the original lot of them.So it's cuttings this season.
I hope you enjoy your tree from Don.
Thanks again!
Here are my four trees seed grown.

Some cuttings were ready today.
If I would of had the patience to wait another ten days I would of had more cuttings. There was about fifteen or so that had roots.
I went through and kept the seven that had radial nebari prospects and planted them on inverted saucers in the colanders.
I am going to load on the fertilizer and cut and restrain leaves and stems to make real twiggy and shape them in late autumn.Hopefully be defoliating next season.
Since these are cuttings, maybe some informal brooms or some forest-like trees.Small trees.

It would also be fun and I think quite beautiful to create a forest of them with each tree in the broom style!! I saw at least one from Japan that I believe was created by Hiroshi Takeyama. He is the king of deciduous bonsai in Omiya.

2nd defoliation,Zelkova #11.

Spent a couple hours with this tree this morning.
It has been exactly one month since its last defoliation. At this rate I should get a third defoliation around the first of Augusto_O
Looking forward to get some wire on it this Autumn.

Thanks!

Thanks,Adair.I really like this tree.
If I still had all ten trees still,I wonder if I could even handle all the defoliating. It took me two hours to prune and defoliate this one.
Of course I have seven cuttings growing,so I guess I will find out:rolleyes:

Probably not.

But even if you don't get enough root generation to harvest the layer before this fall, it is not a big deal to leave layers on the mother tree over winter in this close to the Sound area. It will pick up from where it left off next spring and you'll be able to harvest well ahead of when you could if you waited until next spring to start.

Zelkova#10

Here is a tree I cut back and did a partial defoliation. After I cut it back I realized the inner growth was really not ready for leaf removal. We will see what happens,I can always trim it back in Autumn.

Roots on air layers in 12 days.

I am liking the prospects of a nice radial Nebari for these little guys.Definately makes it worth the while.
I may be separating these real soon.
