Zelkovia Chop in May?

Is it too late to chop my Zelkovia trunk? I'm in Pennsylvania so the leaf buds have all opened, which is why I'm assuming it is too late and I should wait until next March? But I can still sneak it in this year I would love to! Thank you!

The tree will definitely survive. It simply won't grow as much as it would have, now that it has expended its stored energy leafing out.

No problem chopping any tree in the growing season. For some species it is better to chop when they are active and growing as they resist infection better.
There's still plenty of summer left for your tree to grow after a chop now.
