2016 Winter Silhouette Bonsai Expo Kannapolis, NC

Great pics, looks like a terrific show.

Do you know what species tree 31 and the one that follows it (in post 40) are? Great bark and interesting little "wings" on the branches, wondering if they are some type of elm (winged or cedar elms?) or maybe euonymus?

Chris

Some nice trees here... wish a winter silhouette show was focused on being THAT though and didn't have evergreens, tropical sin full leaf... nothing against those kinds of trees, just saying if you call it a "WINTER SILHOUETTE" show... shouldn't the trees be leafless, showing branch structure? If you just want to be a winter show- call it that, right? Guess that has always been a confusion for me- mini-rang aside: really want to make it to this one was hoping to go this year but couldn't make it!

I feel very similar. I think some of the evergreens make a nice accent or part of a shohin composition, but I really prefer the idea of embracing the silhouette!

Saw a post on facebook stating that Sergio's beech won "best of show." Congratulations!

Thanks Chris!

Not surprising in the least, but happy to hear this! :) Congrats indeed!

Thanks Judy! Plenty of good (no great!) trees at this exhibit as was expected, so I think it was probably pretty tough to decide?

Well, they have an award for the "Best Conifer". So it seems that they expect to have them at the show.

Actually, a show of all bare deciduous would be rather boring.

Pines actually look best in the winter. Junipers can show winter color.

Many of the ficus were defoliated to make them appear to be deciduous.

Yep, every needle on your pine looked fat, green and happy and the shimpaku that won Best Conifer had the beginnings of it's winter bronzing highlighting it's canopy...absolutely beautiful!

I guess it's time to post the spoils of the expo. I had a blast wandering around in the vendor area, meeting awesome people!

Great little pot from @hometeamrocker
