I’ve tried looking online and on the forum but its still quite confusing.

General advice is airlayer after the new growth has hardened off. However I also hear/see people have air layered before then (ie February) and had success. Does anyone know which timing is best? Its still frosty here and the hedge I’d be taking from is showing no signs of life yet so if the earlier method is best I may have enough time to get it done.

I’ve also seen a few opinions on technique, the usual ring method or more of a girdle method, which doesn't seem the same as touniqueting, it almost seems like a combination of the two? Again, does anyone know which method produces the better results? I specifically saw this girdle method mentioned for beech and that in at least one case it was done around February before the new flush of growth occured.

If anyone has any insight, I’d appreciate it! I know air layering can be tricky, seen a few posts where its taken years to properly root, so just want to try and do the best I can.
