You never know what trash will turn into something good. When I collected this California juniper, I thought it was trash, but it was going to be bulldozed so I dug up up anyway. When I took this photo 4 months after collecting it, it looked even more like trash. However, it has recovered nicely and it has the bones to be something unusual - a chokkan California juniper with nice spread out nebari. So I'm going to work it a little bit this year, and a lot more next spring to see what it'll give me.chokkan.jpg

Here is my little common juniper. It was bought as a young container plant, straight stick. It's my training tree, because I'd like to master some collected. So I learn from this poor lil' tree and then apply what works... I still like this one more and more and who knows, in 5 years it can be nice shohin.common juni.jpg
 
Join a bonsai club. You are in CA which has a thriving bonsai scene.
 
petegreg is that poop, charcoal or what in your pot?
 
I did want to know what the black stuff was in the pot though...just curious.
 
I'm guessing it's not fresh it it doesn't smell after watering.
