Literati Pine?

Really nice, Smoke.....really nice. Like what you have done with this pine.
Lookin' gooood.........

I'll agree with everyone else here that the little guy looks good. I too am being tempted to take at least one of my almost 3yr old seedlings out of the 15 I have, and make something in that size just for fun. Maybe next year. :-)

Spoiler alert:eek:! Perhaps if everyone is done slapping friends back can take good look at branch structure. Does no one see that at least 3 branches coming from same place on tree? Maybe more 4 0r 5 even? Trunk looks good but would look better with fewer whorl brancheso_O.

At least he's posting pix of his work.

I can't see the 3, 4 or 5 branches from the same spot you are seeing...? I see two...the top left pad is a bit above the branch on front and a branch on back at the same level...maybe, so not three potawa...
he can cut it later as he makes up his mind which branches to keep to fill up the pads he has in mind...
remember on a pine when you cut it off it's gone forever :) unless you can graft flawlessly so that it heals with no graft scar

I like the design.

best regards
Herman

Didn't you make a similar comment about or request of this poster on another thread? And it was ignored, if I recall.

Almost 500 posts and not a single one with a photo of any of his own trees...hmm!

In the Kokufu 63 journal there is a huge Japanese maple that is designated " Important Bonsai Masterpiece", if you study it, you'll find that it has a number of rule breakers. If you remove even one of those "flaws", it would ruin the very finest Japanese maple that I have even seen. It's on page 18 if anyone cares to look. In my view, one has to learn to be flexible with the rules. I have a couple of trees that have a back branch for the first branch on the tree. I'd be pretty ill if someone were to remove either one. None of this silly banter is meant to be offensive..............the key is to be flexible with rules. Thanks............SK

Yep...

I had posted a tree once, either on this forum or maybe IBC, that had a couple of major branches that were close to being bar branches. Several forum experts (won't name them) immediately rose up to inform me that I had to remove one of them because they were bar branches and would cause reverse taper blah blah.

I took the tree to a workshop with a well known bonsai master (also won't name that person) and mentioned the suggestions I got on the forum. The response? "Don't listen to those idiots on the internet!"

Don't apply rules blindly is good advice...

Lances crab is an example.....

The first 2 pretty barish....
But if you remove one.....
Where Is all the foilage?
Goneish.

I'm on the fence between....

Better material....
And bar branches for fullness.

Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it don't.

I will post the up-skirts here.

The first pair of branches comes off the main trunk. Only a pair.

The next pair come from the end of the main trunk. Well seperated by the first pair.

The last pair come from the divided apex made from a side branch.

This is a top view looking down onto the tree.

This colored view goes like this. The main trunk coming from the pot is in red. The first pair of branches come off the trunk in lime green. the second pair are the end of the main trunk divided into two branches. The apex is a side branch trained up divided into two. Each pair of branches do not form a whorl. One of the first rules of pines it to reduce to a pair. In fact that is good to do on all trees especially deciduous trees. I hope you can see there are no whorls and no bulges of material. Sorry you are offended by pats on the back. Like Brian said, I post new things on an almost daily basis thru the growing season. I would love to have the opportunity to critique some of your work. Post it up!

Not offended by back slapping. Just by perceived blind allegiance to imperial masterpiece by less experienced. Personally am not subject to general hero worship and it offends. For picture of my tree see Bristlecone pine. Personally have no claim to be master of anything especially self and certainly not Bonsai:rolleyes:. However have observed, read much, attempted since 1959 and consulted with Bonsai professionals so have some small knowledge of basics. Even in literati would be most uncomfortable to use bar branch, whorl or 4 trunks. From pictures can see you mostly avoided these after all. Last of all do not need critique of anyone among "idiots on internet". Am own worst critic and too much perfectionist. In end can offer opinions but everyones tree is their own to please self;). When ready may post trees not yet perfected but well started by ultimate Creator and Master of all which I have been blessed to become present caretaker of.
