Would you buy this?

That's a lot of back breaking with that size... Price seems high too but I would be more cautious due to the size.

If weight is/will become an issue, hollowing out the center could help and, in my opinion, would also be a very interesting approach for your tree. This tree from omiya comes to mind, which surely looked like your tree at some point

Sounds like I'm late on giving out advice, but I'll still weigh in. I'd lean toward yes, but with the following considerations:
- is $1000 a financial burden?
- Am I confident I won't kill the tree? How recently was it collected? I'm a noob, so I would consider holding off until I know what I'm doing, but your answer here is obviously different.

I'm the opposite of @Cadillactaste, I love a good road trip. That part wouldn't dissuade me.

Video about the road trip and pick up coming?
I would consider that a boring video.. Lots of german autobahn. Who likes watching a Dutch bloke, in a French guy driving 180 km/h (110mph) on a German autobahn?

I think there will a 2-year timelase at some point.

Ah, I see the plan is already coming together (with a nod to the A-Team)!

T think you made the right decision.

Here in the US if I had a bonsai YouTube channel instead of model trains I’d buy it then shoot a bunch of videos and justify it as a tax deduction ASAP. Maybe Germany isn’t as generous with tax deductions but certainly you are making enough off your videos to cover €1000? And please don’t tell me you are letting your wife know exactly how much you are making off your channel!

I do not have a company so this would not be a tax-deduction here.
And no, my videos do not cover 1K purchases! I wish. My camera was stolen last year, and it would have been nice to buy a new one from YT returns.

A deal was struck. A price was agreed.

Good you did i was starting to get tempted after you initial post. One thing I found is that they can very sensitive to a certain type of aphid. I had an aphid infestation for two years that caused leaf drop and stunted growth. So as soon as you see any kill them.

I do not have a lot of patience with aphids either :)

Very enjoyable thread and I'm glad you got the tree. All I could add is the older I get, the smaller my trees get. It's a no win, though, because I over compensate with increased volume. Roll with it and enjoy the ride!

Here's a pic I took when I saw this tree in Omiya last March. I had a full on conversation with the old security guard about how special this tree is and could only understand about 10% of what he was saying in Japanese, it was a great time.

how special this tree is

It’s nice, but i wouldn’t say special. This is a very common form for Ume bonsai, and there are many others that are remarkably nicer

To get back on topic, here a few more pictures - from last week - in case it might interest the OP. I tried to capture how thin the back wall of the trunk is

I've seen mahalebs on the european Facebook auction page that were cheaper and more developed. But of course if you just want a big trunk. Then buy it.

I bought this mahaleb at the trophy for 60 euro. The trunk is 17 cm wide and 40 cm in height. Still not finish with carving and first styling. But a really good buy I think.
