Colorado Blue Spruce No. 2

Looking good! There is a guy in our club that has a tree similar style to this. I’ve been thinking about seeing if Todd has any material that would be a good candidate for this style 😁. So, that’s to say that I like what you’re doing with this.

Do you think that the foliage mass should eventually be smaller? I think it would make the trunk and overall image look more powerful if the foliage mass was smaller and more compact.

Thanks literally has all these people before talking about it and interacting on this thread is love to hear more feedback but this site is so siloed

Siloed=good.

Reddit is full of thin-skinned, screeching autistic, dweebs.

Their favorite phrase: ACK-CHYOO-WALLY.

I am actually curious what you think lead to good growth for this tree? What did you fertilize with? Organic? Looks like pumice but did you water alot? Full sun? Do you have any plans to try and grow or graft roots on other side?

You'd think more of the folks on Facebook and Reddit would be looking for higher-quality discourse.
It’s good to be absolutely annihilated every now and then in fact I crave it in my career and form my bonsai teacher it’s good for grounding.. I guess it’s form when I played sports I purposely didn’t do stuff right sometimes just so I can hear feedback

Hmm I think time will tell it definitely won’t get longer I want more elaborate apex that’s gonna grow up more along w second branch .. the bottom branches I think it will be more compact as in the foliage wont extend out than it already is .. I foresee either a long rectangle that’s deep enough for the roots or a long long slab daddy

I’m getting g small droplets of sap and some old bark came off what appears to be preexisting deadwood? I’m sired to what the full extent of it is? I like the bark look so I took some bark off other areas where there are layers of bark and used cut paste to stick it back on.. I didn’t see any saw dust.. is this common for blue spruce yamadori?

Otherwise the foliage is happy pictures above .. sap and spots are attached

Sorry I missed this , it was in pure pumice with the native soil.. I fertilized it with fish fertilizer and had it in full sun. I don’t have plans to graft roots on the right side since the wood was already dead at that point and the wood itself was left over. Roots on right side are in good shape. So my focus is just to make sure that the roots are healthy it’s in a pumice and akadama mix. And I make sure it’s not over watered. It has good drainage. The foliage is in very good shape so much that older needles are starting to set buds for next years spring flush. The new foliage has a pretty blue color , different than my other Colorado blue spruce which is greener in foliage.

I love this tree and the color of the bloom is beautiful.

I would like to see a little more separation of the apex from the trunk. Maybe shortening this jin will help give that apex some more definition.

Creating more negative space between the foliage pads as it matures will really help it look more mature as well. This is a great start!

I like this tree and the work you've done on it. I think it's moving along in a good direction. But I definitely think the tinjin is far too tall and distracting, and I really like trees with tinjin. I saw this tree on your bunjin pitch pine post, in the photo of your benches, and it was even distracting then.

Just a thought.. To each their own, though, still a cool tree.

@Ruddigger @shohin_branches this was only the initial wiring , the refined detail wiring still still to come .

don’t even have it in the final pot .. and I also need to do more refinement on the Jin next to apex.

@littletreefarmer absolutely not reducing the height of this .. some refinement of the Jin but I am not cutting it down to half of its height this is the natural Jin and it’s staying that way otherwise too refined deadwood
Looks contrived to me. The Jin on side yeah but the tenjin no. The tenjin even on the reference tree had a tall Jin but was refined

Also I think that Jin would help with that other wise it is too far form the trunk

In the fall I want to style this tree it has a good defining branch that will be bent carefully with raffia etc , a middle branch and an apex.. lots of buds as I’ve stated before but this spruce serves a wonderful inspiration for this style of Colorado blue spruce
The thing that I like most about this reference is it shows how the massive jin itself was thinned and sculpted, slowly with a sandblaster or wire wheel, to expose the grain and stubs from where old branches were previously growing out of the trunk. Just blows my mind how many little branches he was able to uncover, and now I'm going to look at my thick jins a little differently.

No I appreciate the feedback but I’ll give my defense for my decision ..

Why do you think It distracts , do you not see the tree as entire composition , why do you feel like the only focal point should be foliage ? Additionally did this tree design it’s like reducing a massive fin on a juniper , would you do that if you felt it took away from the foliage or too distracting ? Or do you accept it as part of the trees identity… which is why I’m going to refine the tenjin but not reduce height .. it’s part of the trees identity. Look at Mirai Norwal tree.

Like I said, you do you. But you asked for opinion, and decried the lack of discourse.. The tenjin is far too distracting for the design, but it's not my tree. I understand the sentimentality ththough.
Did you see the inspiration photo for the direction of this tree?
