We used to have a so called "Weekend Challenge" on the old KoB forum. I actually started it back then. Was a lot of fun and immensely educational for everyone. We would announce our project for the upcoming weekend(s) and post progression photos. The project included anything around bonsai: Styling, repotting, carving, collecting, events, you name it.
Why don't we revive it? Better yet, why don't we create the one and only BNUT Weekend Challenge..
Hope it's okay to call it like that? This is not a contest. You are not up against anyone else but yourself! ;)

Best,
Dorothy

So, here is my project for the upcoming or two weekends:

A Parsonii juniper ( from Wigert's), was never wired before. Just cleaned and pruned.

This looks like it will turn out to be a great tree Dorothy good find!

This remains to be seen..thanks! That's the challenge of this endeavor. Usually we post pics after we have already styled a tree, when we know it turned out okay. This time one has to come up with progression pics, good or bad.

Hope you join! And you too..:)

Best,
Dorothy

This is a growing year for me so I don't think i'll have any dramatic transitions except for one or two trees possibly late spring early summer. A lot of older material i'll be refining, and new material that will be ready for dramatic transitions next year or the year after. If I do anything dramatic I will post them here for all to see. Winters hanging on in NY, although i'm 90% done with my repotting thanks to my cold house it doesn't seem to want to go away. Hopefully spring will peek it's head out in the next 2-3 weeks!

Maybe a few weekends from now... most of my trees are still frozen in the ground. Gonna be about -5 degrees C tomorrow. I think thats like negative a million farenheit or however you spell it :)

Maybe B-NUT could make this it's own Forum ???

And then we could have new threads that we start for each weekend ???

We could start it at the beginning of the week and discuss what we
will be working on... then post the results, and comment on them...

-5*c = 23*f ;)

Could the "Challenge" be of previous work (~4 weeks ago)?

I like the idea Dorothy, how about this last weekends work...would that qualify?
Cheers Graham

I will definitely join when I have a candidate. Most of mine are regularly worked on so none at the moment qualifies. :(

The good news, my wife wanted us to get a juni each (for almost a month now) and practice on those. Just need to visit the nursery. We went to several but didn't find good candidates yet.

Sounds fun, and I too want to welcome Dorothy, and thank her for joining us here. I've been so busy that I've not even had time to post in the wonderful tree thread you started earlier (though I've been following it...) I work most weekends, so for me it would have to be a different timing, but I'm game to do it when I can.

Would each person make their own thread? I like the idea. I'm glad you're hanging with us now Dorothy.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Regarding the challenge, the point is not to post things after the fact but to announce what the project is, then make progression pictures.

It really does not matter whether it's about styling a tree, sharpening tools, cleaning pots, going to a bonsai exhibit, going to your local forrest for inspirational photographs. The pics don't have to be of magazine quality either. The goal is to work efficently - whatever you do bonsai related.

Think about it this way:

When you are a bonsai apprentice in Japan or US or anywhere else, you are constantly under the eyes of your master, other students or clients. You really cannot get away with sloppiness or disorganization. That's why I like the Weekend Challenge. You really challenge yourself to get something accomplished (bonsai related) after you planned and organized it.

I promise not to start more threads like this..;)..I am really not very sociable when it comes to online forums. Perhaps this is related to the fact that English is not even my second language..In any case, think less complicated about the Weekend Challenge and JUST DO IT.

Why? You are coming up with the best ideas ever...please continue. WE beg you.

He-he-he...I just used the Nike motto a month or so back. I like it! ;)

this is a fun idea. I'll need to find something to make a project out of. I am planning on collecting some elm trees but I may just leave them in the ground for another year. not sure yet. I'd really like to get a nice little tree to style like the one you posted. That looks the most fun :D

You fooled me. Your grammar and punctuation rivals and/or exceeds many college graduates I know.

Now then; back on KoB did you all share one thread or each start your own to share your weekend challenge?

As far as I recall each weekend had its individual post/ thread. However, the disadvantage was that many times you would work the same (styling) project over several weekends.
Please note, you really don't want to create "instant" weekend trees. That's not what it is about. It's about what you are planning to do or continue planning to do. I'd leave it in one collective thread. That way one can bounce back and forth between unfinished projects (unfinished = giving the tree time to rest).

Best,
Dorothy

I think the only thing you loose with a collective thread is the progression of the individual tree as it would be documented in it's own thread.

I agree with this statement. Perhaps though, some of the work we do on trees doesn't require its own thread. Repotting comes to mind.
