image.jpgimage.jpgSo I picked up this Kishu Shimpaku off eBay quite a few years back. It has good nebari at the angle you see it planted. But I am stuck on what I should do with this one. Anyone want to throw out an idea or a sketch? It's one of the few trees I've had for a long time that I just don't know what to do with... I cut it back pretty hard last year while visiting here and it spurted some juvenile growth and back budded throughout. There's a few options I can think of but i just can't seem to settle on any of them. Ideas, thoughts? The yellower growth is old mature foliage. Much of the nicer green foliage is newer juvenile growth.

Drink the rest of that bottle and see what happens!

I would remove the two branches that hang down for starters.

I was thinking maybe all the trunks except the two on the right. But I was also thinking maybe I should keep them, maybe remove the two on the right and grow it as a semi cascade since the trunk leans so much. This its sat with nothing significant done to it for ages.

Wrap all the trunks with raffia and wire and bend the $&!& out of it so it looks like a twisted old yamadori.

Not sure if you have the root base to pull it off, but what about laying it down and going raft style with it.

Nice

I really like that tree. A nice eye pleasing shape jumps right out at me. I'm jealous.

Have you thought about taking off the left side when viewed from this photo? Just something I saw when I looked at it

That may be what I do bending and some Jins on the left side.

Thanks, that's why I bought it I saw a nice tree in there, somewhere along the way i forgot what I was gonna originally do to it. As others have mentioned taking off the left side may be the best course of action.

How would your bend the heck out of it? I actually did a lot of rough wiring on this guy about 4 years ago and bent it considerably all the trunks were straighter to start. I arched them upwards. They're very strong though and hard to bend for me anyway. Maybe next time you do big bending I can bring this guy along and we can play with it as well.

I think I would cut the long straight trunk on the left first and keep the left most curved trunk Then see what I had

Hard to see everything from the photos but I can see why you have been patient about doing anything. Very nice material. Good luck

Sounds good. As long as there is no deadwood in the trunks it'll be relatively easy. Raffia, heavy wire, maybe a crowbar and some guy wires.

Totally agree...good place to start. The two right trunks are very good, and probably the whole tree when it's all said and done.

Maybe?????????????????
