Potomac Bonsai Association Spring Festival 2014

I just dropped of a few trees for the display. The place looks like an anthill with people scurrying around cleaning up the displays from when it rained so much in the last 3 days. Vendors already loading the shelves with material and supplies, veteran and notable locals applying moss to their trees, and BLUE sky. And tons of carpenter bees as usual. Cant wait til tomorrow to see what's in the vendor tent. Def. need supplies.
Come to the Chinese Pavilion from 11 to 1 and say hello.

See you nuts there.

What was the damage? ;) I couldnt make it as my kids were still sick. I might try to swing by on Sunday.

Are you going to the PBA auction at Behnke's on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend?

Not a bad spread. Meehans is about a 1/4 of the vendor area. Tools, pots and artwork are abundant. In my opinion, the material was less than inspiring. There are a few trees >1000 that are lovely but the majority of the stock is either too young or too ugly. We left with more money in our pockets than we had planned to.

Met Lordy. Classy guy with an infectious laugh. It was a pleasure bud!

Also, asked around for you James. Fruitless but I did meet some new friends in the process.

This is the 2nd year in a row I've been looking for Dancing Jackie Gleason and it was not displayed. Last I heard it was stressed from a repot. I'm worried it didn't fair well.

I rarely buy trees there, but have bought pots from Lang and Dale (I hear Dale no longer vends there), wire from Julian, and last year stocked up on mica pots from Meco Bonsai. I've been going the last 6 or so years, hope to be able to make it sometime this weekend.

That's bad news about the Jackie Gleason tree. I really wonder how well Ponderosas do in our hot, very humid climate. I have a few, with some doing just fine, and others less so.

I think this is a better show than last year by about 40%. Not sure why I chose 40%, but it is better organized, volunteers seem more willing to do what is needed, even if that means dropping what you are doing and go help elsewhere. I saw a lot of tempting material, but like Berobinson said, it is hard to part with the kind of money some were asking for nice material..That being said, I did let go of 3 figures for an azalea that I considered worth the money, and the seller from NC was willing to negotiate on the price, so I got it for just a bit less than marked. I'm happy. And it will bloom soon. Bonus!
I spied Berob at the vendor area, and thinking about it I did see him and his lovey lady inspecting the member trees display when I way watching out for theives in that display.
Berob, it was very nice meeting you and the lady with you. Not sure why it didnt strike me who you were in the Chinese pavilion, but it never clicked. At Meehan's area, I looked up from a tree and saw you and it just reminded me of a pic of you I had seen online somewhere. Normally I would not have spoken up, but something made me blurt out "BeRob??" and sure enough... I was happy to speak with you for the short while we talked.
I also met "Augustine", who I didnt know, but coincidentally had met before at an auction of a mutual friend's auction who ultimately passed away. It is nice to be able to put a face to a persona or name after forming an opinion of that person from dealings online only. Berob, I can say that you are very similar to what I had thought you were like. Classy and someone I could see associating with outside of Bnut is how I came away from meeting you. I hope to see you again somewhere.
I did a workshop with Arthur Joura today with a San Jose Juni I had (BYOT). I must admit I didnt know much of Arthur Joura before I "met" him online at IBC, where he expounded on his philosophy on bonsai design as it pertains to American trees. Something in his thought process struck a chord in me that made me decide that this made sense to me too.

Anyway, I took a ton of pics and will post soon.
Tomorrow (day 3, 45 miles each way...) I take a big boxwood to another BYOT workshop with Rodney Clemons, then another 3 hr volunteer at another workshop, then at 5PM I claim the trees that I brought last Thursday for display. A busy 4 days but since it happens only once a year, I am glad I was able to participate in what I did, and met the Bnut members I did.

Member display.. Arthur Joura and Rodney Clemons discussing each tree.

Hi bud

I never made it on Friday. Got hemmed up with work. Was out there today with my buddy for 3 hours. Agreed material wasn't all that great. Great to see a lot of my friends. Overall I enjoyed it generally the experience is fruitful. Ill be back tomorrow for about two hours. I did look for you but missed ya...we will catch up.

James

First time going for me, very nice event!! Had a chance to sit in on Arthur's/Rodney"s dual demo. Good picture of the group elm planting they did, pretty creative outcome.

Ended up walking away with one tree (Morris boxwood). Have a picture of it below...

If that came from the 2 guys on the far end, right side, I almost couldnt put that one down. A good price if it is the tree I am thinking about. If the same place, that is where I got my azalea. They were from NC, and new this year.
I saw a man and woman looking at that tree and I even recommended it as a good buy to them. I guess I just have enough boxwoods to not be able to justify the expense this weekend. Nice tree!

Berob, this is for you

I'll get more pics up in the next day or so. I just got home after a 9 hr day there.
During one lull I was speaking with my buddy who happens to be the past curator of the Bonsai Museum and the venue for the event. I asked him about the Jackie Gleason Dancing tree. He also happens to be the one who headed the repotting. He and the other man are both members in the club I belong to. Anyway, he said the tree is as vigorous as ever, but they are just short on space since the Japanese Pavilion is closed for renovations, so the icons are on benches in the courtyard in front of the Chinese Pavilion, and what wont fit is in the storage yard behind the Chinese Pavilion. Looks plenty healthy to me!

Aw man. You're just the best. Good to see this old guy again. Looking healthy and happy. Though it is always great to see new trees on display, I do miss those few that strike me. How about that live oak that has been redesigned over the last ten years? And Naka's montezuma cypress that was his first tree. I love the back stories behind the collection of Naka's trees.

one day you and me and my buddy Jim will have to spend a few hours behind the scenes and you can get the low down.
I also talked with Ron Lang about a pot I got from RockM. He said Rock was there Saturday, and is doing well. Just dropped off the Bnut lifestyle because of all the controversy, egos, self-important personas, etc. I get it.

Thanks for posting the pictures - sorry I missed it. Perfect weather this weekend too :(

I wish more people with better trees put them in the exhibit. A lot of those trees seemed to be in training for less than two years - or worse, that maple seedling that was dropped into a pot probably a week or two ago. I've seen much better trees in collections around the area. Oh well.
