One of my local nurseries has been growing what they call Korean Boxwood (Buxus microphylla) for a few decades. Every few years I stop in to see how they are doing. In Jan. I paid them a visit and found that quite a few had taken on some decent character since the last time I looked at them...probably 4-5 years ago. So, I bought about a dozen or so...mostly 3 gallons, a couple 2s and couple 1 gallons.

Here is what most looked like to start with...

out of the can and the debris cleaned off and out.

I will repot once the temps warm up and the plants start growing... Might eventually do some sort of group with a few of these....who knows:)

Looks like those are off to a great start in very capable hands! Keep us posted on their progress...

Man, Those are some super nice nursery stick you got there. I would love to get my hands on just one of those...

Very nice. Was this a landscape nursery, or were they knowingly growing prebonsai stock?
just a landscape nursery...but an old mom and pop nursery where they actually have one employee in charge of pruning:) Unfortunately they have stopped propagating and now they just buy and resell...so the days of good material from them are short.

John, you probably know this already but the only difference between the Korean and Japanese boxwood is the flower color. Korean has a yellow flower. I have 15ish Japanese and 1 Korean. I have also noticed (on mine) that the leaf size on the Korean seems to be slightly smaller. Great finds!

Very nice starts. I'm incredibly jealous! If I could find a nursery with material as good as that...ohhh buddy I would have spent some bank.

Nice work John! I always look forward to seeing what you have been up to.

Hey Vin...you know since you wrote this I have been trying do a little research to figure just what these are....to me they have always resembled something closer to Kingsville than any other Korean box that I have ever seen...although this is definitely not Kingsville....The foliage and the growth pattern are different. The best I can tell it is not straight Koreana either. After taking a couple looks around I wonder if these are something closer to Morris Midget or Morris Dwarf which are appear to be a dwarf form of B.microphylla ??? Who knows...doesn't really matter...I like them:) Thanks for the response:)

That's interesting... Maybe they are some kind of hybrid? Either way, I like them to.

I came across some last year that the nursery called little leaf boxwood. Growth pattern like Korean but smaller leaves. They had a whole bunch just like these. Cheap. Didn't buy one. Maybe go back and get one this year though.
For some challenge I read about.

They would qualify for sure.

In my research I did see a reference to something called little leaf Korean box that seemed to be referring to a dwarf version of regular Korean Box. However that is very confusing because the latin name microphylla means little leaf??????? Buxus microphylla 'Koreana' ...thus becomes 'little leaf' Korean Box... seems to redundant to be valid

Who knows for sure. They did seem to have smaller leaves.
