Hey guys and gals,

Does anyone have a good source for these fertilizer baskets? I used to buy them from Dallas Bonsai, but they've stopped selling them and have a different kind now. Any ideas?

I got some from Kaneshin.

Why not teabags?

I've never used tea bags, but I could give them a try. Good thinking!

We just sprinkle teaspoons of compost on and it decays in about a week.
Perhaps to simplistic.

I know that this is an older thread, but I did not wish to start a new one. What are everyone's thoughts on using plastic fertilizer baskets? I have had positive experiences and though they are not dirt cheap in sufficient quantity for a decent sized bonsai collection, I feel they are effective at keeping vermin from totally interfering with my fertilizing regimen. I favor the ones that snap shut and have a small stake to attach into the soil. The baskets last several years, even in the harsh Florida sun and keep the fertilizer pellets from dissolving too quickly and mucking up the soil. I am especially pleased with the small sized ones recently purchased from eBay (just have to be selective about the color, some are extremely unsightly!). The small baskets stay shut and allow virtually none of the residual material to get into the substrate as the pellets break down. Lacking a sufficient number of these baskets, I have recently just scattered the fertilizer pellets on the soil surface of many of my less far along pre-bonsai and twigs in pots. The fertilizer pellets (that don't get knocked off or eaten) quickly break down and become clumps on the soil within a few waterings. Thus, I do plan to source enough as cheaply as possible for all my potted trees.

I see virtually no photos of these on the forums here, so I was just wondering why these are not more commonly used? Tea bags could work but it seems these would be messy compared to the baskets (and easier for vermin to get to).

I personally can't say I know a Vermin that won't make quick work of those little baskets.

I just through a couple of them out.

Do what @markyscott does - He cuts short lengths of PVC pipe, put them on top of the substrate and loads them up. Really inexpensive and I think really inventive. If you don't want to saw it into rings this tool is also inexpensive and cuts them like butter -

I acquired my baskets from Kaneshin with the latest tool order as well, but found good resources here in EU. Tell you the truth, the material they are made of is good enough, able to withstand two winters here in 6a zone... But...I would need mutch more of these baskets, so I use them on wind exposed sites preferably.

Since the original posting, I bought some baskets through Kaneshin and was very pleased.

Hey guys,
Sorry to bring up this topic again but can someone tell me if its a bad idea to cover your fertilizer cakes with screen and wire, the same screen and wire size we use to cover pot drainage holes. Crows are stealing my cakes... tea bags with toothpicks and plastic baskets may not overpower the crows. Im wondering if the wire will damage too many surface roots or something. Thanks

If the screens are not tied to anything I would bet the crowd would just rip them up. Maybe put some bird snare traps all over your benches ?

the screens would be tied down by wire going through them over the cakes and into the soil. Lol snare traps may be a last resort
