Time to collect a couple elms....

Good question, all of these trees are in unsifted soil. I ran out of my mix with Akadama pretty quick so now it's pure unsifted pumice which holds quite a bit of water but still drains very quickly.

I've used 1:1 pine bark and perlite on most Elm I collected. I found that even with just pure pine bark, my American Elm and Cedar Elm roots were awesome. Were I to go collecting again, that's all I'd use the first season at least. So if you find that you're out of perlite and cash, just try pine bark.

It's actually smaller particle pumice, delivered from a mine 2 cubic yards for 150 bucks, definitely a good deal.;)

Here's a better shot of the odd ones hollow. I found this tree about 2 feet from the edge of the river, in an area that will be completely under water within 2 months time when the spring freeze happens in the mountains from here all the way up north (rio grande remember? It's big) so I cannot estimate this trees age at all but I went through today and cleaned out all the dead branching and realized this poor thing had it sprung growth flush completely killed every spring by the floods, then it would hardly grow after that, so it's pretty old. It was also leaning downstream (obviously) but the two hollows connect and the tree would literally have water, sand, and rocks flowing through it when the floods happened. Here you can see my chopstick sticking out on both ends.20170302_063546.jpg

Gnarly tree, I'm keeping this one! Lol

I think this one would make a mean clump. Raft? I'm ignorant. Penjing even.
I'm fact half of the trunk was buried and I found exactly as a clump! That's somewhat the plan once I get more roots under it and can get it a bit deeper in the box come next repot, then I want to score the trunk to stimulate some roots (which I know it will).

I never mentioned that I actually went out twice yesterday, once in the morning and again on the evening. I just didn't have it in me to pot the 2 from the second trip up, I had time today after work to get one potted.
Another Russian olive.20170302_175912.jpg 20170302_175918.jpg
Look at all those buds ready to pop!

Wow...can't even begin to imagine the care and time that goes into all that. You must have a lot of land.
It is lots of work, but it's my passion for sure. I work 9 hours a day 5 days a week, I'd say I average about 4.5-6 hours with my trees on a work day. On my days off if my fiancé is at work I spend a few hours one day helping my teacher with her trees and the rest of that day and the other working on the trees. Let's just say I don't have much friends lol
Oh and I'm pretty sure I'm on a 1/6 acre lot, so not to big, but there's still plenty of space to fill;) but I've learned my limits finally :p

That's my favorite yet.

By last, you meant on Wednesday right?
Not last last.

By, learned your limits, you mean, you can pack about a thousand more till you hit the fence?

Lol!

I can't wait to see these go off this year!

What in the heck are you going to do with over 300 collected trees? Are you getting into the Yamadori business?
