Does it have to be nice weather first?

You can start as soon as you like. It will just sit there waiting until the tree starts photosynthesizing

That is a great question and I will be watching. It seems that physiologically there might be some advantage in doing it when buds are swelling.

In deciduous, Does a tree even send sugars and starches back down to the roots before the leaves are hardened off? Im legitimately asking, because I am not sure if the tree even begins to grow roots until after it can properly photosynthesize.

PS I liked your posts more when they weren’t as trolly @Forsoothe! , you must be getting bored.

We have a season we call "winter" up here. We usually don't do a lot of gardening in the snow or when the ground is frozen. It lasts for four months. We play cards, drink, and tell funny stories about Okies playing touch football at the university level. We laugh a lot.

If it is not nice weather yet, you could bring the tree indoors, layer it, and keep it in a cold dark room while it recovers. Make sure to water at least 4 times a day. In 2-4 weeks, you should have at 2 trees ready for a bonsai pot. These trees should be planted in store brand cat litter and immediately placed into direct sunlight.

The only room I have like that is the outhouse. There might be a problem with the size. The hole IS pretty deep...

Being an okie I find it funny that you talk about us at all. I assumed you guys thought we lived in teepees

Wait a minute. You don't? Sod houses? Sodbusters in sod houses, now that makes sense. What was I thinking? The buffalo are protected now so you wouldn't have building materials for teepees.

Yeah. Raw fish gets to be old about this time of year. At least the beer stays cold.
