The combination of the recent thread on akadama and watering and my decision to try a walk on the dark and use some akadama this spring leads to the following question. In a “typical” temperate zone setting what mixes of akadama, pumice, and lave work best with which trees? Now I know right off that some wise ass will say forget akadama, it will kill your trees, or there is no typical temperate zone setting but humor me and lets discuss the variables. I initially planned to use Boon Mix for my maples, JBP, hinoki, elms, hawthorns and a few of my other deciduous trees but keep most of my conifers in my standard pumice, haydite, pine bark mix.

So the real focus of my question is which species do you use akadama with and in what kinds or ratios with pumice, lava, haydite or other ingredients? As I said in my case I plan you use a basic 1:1:1 ratio of hard akadama, pumice, and heat expanded slate available here in NC. I will still toss in a handful or two of pine bark for every 5 gallons. I am hoping to bump up the moisture holding capacity of my soil and prevent the leaf burn that I frequently get on my maples. So please jump in with your experiences using akadama mixes with various deciduous and coniferous species.

Even though I am not at all a fan of akadama, I did notice my broadleaf trees like it. I cant afford and don't want to afford to be repotting those into akadama every other year. So I'm exploring.

A 2:1:1 akadama:pumice:lava and some pine fines seems to work well.
Chestnut, oaks, magnolia are about all of the species I still have in akadama.

I am several different mixes and keep changing but I believe I like a mix of 1/2 akadama and 1/2 pumice (or 1/4 pumice, 1/4 lava). I have an auto watering system though so I like it fast draining so I don't have to obsess over it. I also reuse soil so I often wind up with a lower akadama percentage over time as it gets screened out more than the pumice/lava. I will say most of my material is deciduous (likes more water) and most is in grow boxes (probably can use more drainage). Also in Atlanta so it is warmer here. If it is in a shallow bonsai container then I would lean more towards 75-100% akadama or just a straight up Aoki mix. A conifer mix, I would probably do the boon mix or something similar.

This is the first year I purchased akadama so I can’t really help, but there is a great video on YouTube with Andrew Robson about deciduous trees. If I remember correctly he only uses 50/50 akadama and pumice mix, I’m going to try with some of my trees and see. However I can’t just stick up on akadama, it’s expensive. I do get my pumice at fifth season in Asheville but lately they have been out, must be all you blue ridge members buying it all lol.

I bought 3 bags last year and am coasting on that. I also use Vole Block heat treated slate instead of lava and got 2 bags of akadama from Bonsai Learning Center. Last time I was at 5th Season they had big bags of pumice but it is larger diameter than the Mother Earth they used to carry, hope they get it back in stock. I don’t think the club has put in a group order in several years.

Yeah that’s basically my mix now- permitill, peat moss, pumice and pine bark. Like I said I’m going to try the akadama and see how it goes, I also need to get me some shade cloth since everything I have needs some shade.

I think Mother Earth stopped producing pumice. That is what i always bought too. I could get it for $14 a bag at my hydro shop. Not cheap but I order from Jonas at Bonsai Tonight now. Struggle is real on the east coast. You can get truckloads out west.

I found a store in Greenville SC that just got Mother Earth back in stock. I used to buy it here for about $16/cu ft but the stuff 5the Season now has is $24/cu ft. The last akadama I got was $35/13 liters which comes close to $70/cu ft. ouch!

I’ve got pumice from this company for years. I’m very satisfied. Highly recommended. General Pumice Products. 3 gallon bag, various sizes, $29, free USPS shipping.
Bulk orders too. https://www.generalpumice.com/

I've ordered from both places, and would recommend the pumice from GeneralPumice over BonsaiTonight's "pumice". 99% of the stuff from BonsaiTonight would disintegrate into mush from slight finger pressure.

This year I'm mixing hyuga with lava for the drainage layer.
A little better water retention and thinner layer.

Dunno about BonsaiTonight pumice, yet I’ve made multiple orders to GeneralPumice, totaling 6 bags in the past year. Little waste and very good product strength and texture.

As I wash/heat/sift/reclaim the pumice, lava and some akadama from my media upon repotting, it will be a couple years before I know how the GP product holds up.

cheers

First I have never used akadama. Mainly availability. Cost . And I thick headed . Main reason is I live inUS zone 4 . And every study I have seen is when it freezes . It breaks down with a few cycles . I have a interest in using it but am wondering . Does anybody have experience with it freezing at lower percentages ina mix . I have only seen it froze tested pure form

I live in the second largest country on the planet . We have some of the largest tracks of land covered in forest . So there’s my wife starring at the expensive . Bags of dirt from a small island on the other side of the planet . How does this reflect on her opinion of my sanity .
