Random collection and things and stuff

After losing a bunch of trees a couple years ago I decided to try and stick with trees that do well here. Mostly I've stuck with native trees or ones that seem happy here. These aren't anything special now but I think they have the right bones at least. I have no idea what this shrub is but...

Ulmus rubra - (red elm, gray elm, soft elm, moose elm, and Indian elm)

Around my neck of the woods elms are referred to as white or red by people burning wood for fuel. I'm pretty sure 'white elm ' is hackberry since it's a prevalent species and doesn't get mentioned expect as a weed they call 'hackleberry'. I also think the 'red elms' are our native Ulmus rubra...

    Lost it all.. coming back

Huh, I never though I had anything that interesting to say. For what it's worth one of the biggest things I've done with my life recently is trying to kick all of my spending habits and replacing it with an ironclad budget. I want to buy stuff, oh my, I want it. I'm not buying anything with...

No sir Mr. Al. You've had some major life changes from when I was last posting. I'm very sorry about you losing your wife, for what it's worth. Regardless of misnumeration, yes, it has been quite a few years. I hope the years bring you some perspective and peace. You were a fountain of...

As I said, I read a lot, didn't talk much, for a while. I've enjoyed reading your posts, even though I don't understand much of them. I 100% disagree about things not being people's fault. You own shit, or it will own you.

Thanks a lot Greg. The site has grown a lot, you should be proud. I've been reading some amazing progression threads for the past couple of weeks. My trees getting cooked would've been easily prevented but I wasn't exactly in the right head space, I've started going over what the trees...

They're still green, they just seem to be sulky bastards about getting worked before the buds start moving.

Howdy Nuts. I was a pretty pathetic middling level fella back when BonsaiTalk was a thing, it was great when BonsaiNut came about. I had a lot of bullshit and a few trees that might've been something nice some day and posted quite a bit. I got whack-fucked in the head at work and had some...

Humic Acid - what strength, how often?

Chicken poo needs to be composted. Of the animals I know of rabbits are the only ones that have ready to use fertilizing doo doo.

Other hobbies you have enjoyed are still enjoying now.......

Was this a comic book adaptation of Leiber's "Fafrd and the Grey Mouser" books?

    Backpack for collecting

Carrying a tree that far by hand would be silly, that frame looks like a good idea. If you're moving vertically having your hands free to pull yourself along or brake yourself on the way down would be very useful.

Reiterating what DaveV said, if you're on the west side of the state there is an entry level workshop this Saturday in Omaha. http://nebonsai.blogspot.com has some details. If you make it there look for Max, he's been a tremendous help to me and is probably one of the nicest people I've ever...

    Central Cal. Bonsai Swap meet

Dang, it'd almost be cost effective to drive half way across the country to get some nice material at those prices.

Depending on what part of the state you're in there is also a fledgling Nebraska club that rotates its meetings between Lincoln and Omaha. Seems to be some pretty great people in it, I think the next plan in the works is to try and entice Suthin out some time this spring. I've only been to one...

    Mallsai f. Retusa

Thanks for the feedback! You're all spot on with the fugly Y look, I've just been a chicken with making the cuts. I've been trying to force it where I want it to go (wide spreading canopy, right now!) rather than working with the best foundation the tree has to offer. On the bright...
