Japanese maple from my growing bed

Nicely done, I'll be keen to watch this as I have a palmatum currently in the ground for the same purpose. How long did it take to grow the 3" trunk diameter?

Progression of Acer palmatum ('Sango kaku' coral)

In my (albeit thus far brief) experience with coral bark maples, the foliage has a tendency to lie horizontally rather than sort of hanging or even dropping like some other Japanese Maple. It gives the canopy a light and airy feeling which works well for bonsai. I'd say you do indeed have a...

    Ebihara maples

Whilst we're postulating on nebari and lower trunk flare as per thumblessprimate1's post, would this maple have had anything different other than the techniques shown earlier in the thread?

    Ebihara maples

Looks real impressive! I've ground layered a young palmatum earlier in the growing season (Australia) and it already has decent root growth with a solid 3-3.5 months of growing season left. I'll be sure to try this come winter!

Is the work worth the $59 price?

@Smoke I was referring to the 2 Japanese Maples in this photo you previously attached: Just roughly the trunk thickness at the base above the root flare, and a rough idea of the height. Thanks!

Is the work worth the $59 price?

Hi Smoke, could you give an estimate of the trunk width of these Japanese Maples, the first 2 in your descriptive post? I have a very small coral bark maple that has given me branches that sympathise well with the designs of these 2 trees, and would just like to know what I need to work towards...

Call for red maples (acer rubrum)

rockm that's a great looking group. The leaves don't look much bigger than what you'd expect of a Japanese Maple. We don't get that specific cultivar in Aus, but since the native Acer Rubrum from the deeper South states are all smaller leaved, would seeds from these specific trees grow true to...

    Arakawa color

I keep them in Sydney Australia mate, just as hot as SoCal! You just need to pick your cultivars and leaf characteristics well. Smaller straighter edged leaves do much better in sun and heat than larger serrated leaves. Greens do better than red etc. I have photos for example, I should do a...

    Arakawa color

I believe most sources say around 5 years, which is more or less the same time scale of a regular vigorous Japanese Maple to get it's smooth bark. Only time will make the bark really thick and corky though, 10 years minimum i'm guessing. EDIT: The 'Nishiki Gawa' cultivar will develop thicker...

    Root graft on a maple

Signed up just to say that this is a wonderful looking tree, and what specific cultivar is it? Provided it's not a standard wild type from seed or anything.
