Can anyone show me a decent DIY cement pot?

So can anyone show me a decent homemade pot other than proper ceramics? Like cement or cement type mixes etc. It seems like all of the pots I've seen look like total garbage. They are all way too heavy, too thick and have poor holes for drainage and tie downs. Not to mention it seems like they...

About to remove ~1/3-->1/2 of a bougie's canopy, how much (if any) root-pruning would be optimal here? Thanks!

There is no 'right' way to try to add conifer style jin and shari to a tropical tree. Tropical trees do not involve deadwood in most cases instead utilizing uro and hollowing. Deadwood ROTS on tropical trees in nature and in a Bonsai pot. And no matter what you do to treat a vine with wood...

Need help, my BC's condition has changed from great to brown-tips this past week, cannot figure out what's wrong :(

I have dozens of BC collected and nursery grown. After collection or first chop from a nursery can I don't do ANYTHING to the tree the first year except water it - No pruning, no messing with the roots, I don't even move the box at all. Leave it alone to recover period. I've told you this in a...

Looking for a retailer between Pensacola and Sandestin, Florida

This is like an 80 mile trip between these two - most fl bonsai spots are further south.

    Kishu or Shimpaku?

Actually - shimpaku refers to any type of juniperus chineses in Japan. The regional names/varieties refer to trees grown or traditionally collected in those sections of Japan. Itoigawa found in the Niigata prefecture and Kishu from the Wakayama prefecture. The main issue with identification is...

    Developing nursery plants

I'm talking removing 50-70% of the foliage and the same on the rootball all at once and potting into a small bonsai pot. No problem.

    Developing nursery plants

This to me is so strange as I take 3gal juniper and wire, prune and pot into a bonsai pot all at once. Never had a problem. Even did one July 4th last year as a bet/challenge and its right as rain. Florida I guess ;)

I've collected dozens of cypress and live in north florida and have seen countless BC and PC. I have never seen any foliage on BC to support what you are saying.

Want to da a bald Cypress fusion

Unfortunately @M. Frary this is where things are headed here. A guy from Missouri who doesn't know JACK SHIT about Bonsai asks about a BC and doesn't get the answers he wants so he'll just ignore it since he knows best. I mean why ask? I certainly don't know anything about BC I only have about...

Why ask for advice if you're doing it regardless? Ridiculous post.

Want to da a bald Cypress fusion

I doubt they would fuse - the bark hardens pretty quick. Plus you can grow one as thick as your leg in 5-7yrs in the ground. It would take at least this long for a fusing project.

Have some Q's about preparing for winter (ie timing my last prunes of the growing-season!)

So this is simple and cheap. Two foot pieces of rebar in the ground and the pvc slid over. Throw a couple sheets of plastic over the top and you can roll up the sides when its hot.

Have some Q's about preparing for winter (ie timing my last prunes of the growing-season!)

The proper way is to erect a simple cold frame form the couple months you need it. The bouganvilla and ficus need protection. This can be done for less than $50. If ANY of your trees matter to you then care for them correctly. Pruning them and wiring branches so that they can take up less space...

Any reco's for Twitter people/org's to follow?

Instagram and an RSS reader are by far the best options. My Feedly is currently pulling 167 bonsai blogs and I have a separate instagram for bonsai I'm following almost 100 instagram accounts that pretty much soley post bonsai pics and vids. You can follow mine - I'm in Florida ;)

    Choppychoppy's JBP entry

I didn't cut any to the stem and rerroot. I do have a batch from Mark Comstock that were cut and then recut I believe. I will run those next to 'mine' and watch for differences. I had like 99% germination so for me it isn't necessary. I have discovered much bonsai lore that needs to be...

    Choppychoppy's JBP entry

So I got the 'cuttings' from Mark and have those potted up separately. They were in rough shape when they arrived - thanks USPS haha - but they will prob be good in a couple days. The rest are going wild and I've got a lot with short stems just naturally. Also I've got a few with longer stems I...
