    Amur Maple Progression

About 10 years ago I bought this Amur Maple at a nursery and planted it in the yard. Three years later I dug it up, chopped it down quite a bit and placed it in an Anderson Flat for about 5 years. Here it is today. Coming along nicely.

    Ponderosa Pine No 3

I was once told to remove the flowers or cones on ponderosa pines in the spring because they take too much energy from the tree. Have you ever heard of this before?

    Airlayered American elms

The parent tree was cut down 2 years earlier - it had died. This was growing out from the base when I air layered it.

    Airlayered American elms

I would not say its a traditional broom - branches are not straight enough. I feel it looks more like a "naturalistic broom"

    Airlayered American elms

Yes, I believe this was the direction it was going from the start. I could have done other things with, it but I felt a broom style was the best choice.

    Airlayered American elms

I prune back to two internodes. After doing this for a few years, the leaves reduce. I find these elms to be very tuff. You can probably prune back to one internode if you want to.

    Help with Acer palmatum

It depends on what you mean by letting it grow out. I would start to create branches and prune yearly. I usually prune once in late June and again in dormancy - late winter. If its a branch I am trying to grow out, I let it grow one full year. I have found over the years that letting things...

    Custom Made Wooden Training Pots...

Poin88 is correct. Unless wooden pots becomes a new trend in place of clay or mica pots, wooden pots are used for training only in bonsai. The wood roots. With the utilization of inorganic soils and regular watering (and sometimes freezing) wood will rot and seams come apart in a few years...

For BVF and Rockm...a tree without potential?

Poink88, If I'm not mistaken, were not you one who recently criticized a vendor who was selling bonsai to beginners making false claims about caring for trees???? I would not recommend selling junk material to someone who does not know much about bonsai.

    Maples - tips & advice

Don't worrry about trying to bend the trunk now ( IMO). Maples are enjoyed when they are in full leaf (spring, summer and early fall). When JM are in full leaf it is hard to see the trunk line - though it would be nice to have more movement, sometime you can't. Enjoy the tree for what it is...

My very own Shimpaku group planting

Nice shimpakus. I had the same thought as you 4-5 years ago and someone told me that shimpakus deveolpe the pom-pom effect and therefore a grove or forest planting using shimpaku may have the effect that you are looking for. I made mine into individual bonsai ( I am happy I did this too).

In addition to what you just said there is also the following - do I dare to say it "BUSINESSES TAXES": 1)City property tax - which seems to go up regularly, 2) Personal 15% Social Security Tax, 3) Employer matching at 7% Social Security tax for every hired employee. 4) Medicare and Medicade...
