What would you do with these Japanese Maple cuttings?

FWIW I placed nine cuttings in that propagator back in early Sept, and today I pulled them out and only three had any roots. However those three all had pretty decent root mass, so I potted them up and placed them in a protected area in my garden. If I got three cuttings to root out every time...

Do East Coast US folks need a source of pumice?

What is that in volume? i.e. 5 gallons? I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on 2 cubic yards of 3/8" - 1/4" for almost exactly $1000. 1600 lbs, so $0.62/lb delivered to my door. For a 50 lb bag that would be $31 per bag.

What would you do with these Japanese Maple cuttings?

Yes exactly. Add one part of 3% H2O2 to 9 parts water. Soak the cuttings for 30 minutes. Rinse and plant. I believe it helps but I have very little experience with Japanese maple cuttings. I use this same mixture when I soak seeds overnight prior to putting in the refrigerator for cold...

What would you do with these Japanese Maple cuttings?

100% screened pumice fines. No organic matter. I soaked the cuttings in a mixture of water with about 10% hydrogen peroxide mixed in. I use the same mixture when I cold stratify seeds in the refrigerator. Otherwise I keep them in very bright indirect light - no direct sun but otherwise as...

What would you do with these Japanese Maple cuttings?

Back on 9/8 I was trimming an Acer p "Ryusen" that I have on my back deck, and I set up one of the small bottle propagators in my office. I have to admit to being pessimistic about potential for results (given the lateness of the season), but imagine my surprise that here we are six weeks later...

Favorite sources for Japanese Maples and other Maples.

On the East Coast I like: Mr. Maple J&G's Japanese Maple Nursery (online store = www.jrsmaples.com) Maples n More I have been to all three in person, and they are all worth a visit. All three do a significant online business. Additionally, all three have trees at their nursery that are not...

Was that maple a nursery cultivar? Is it possible that you were cutting back a branch at a graft site?

    Chinese Elm Leaves Turning early

Make sure you give it enough sun, and when you water make sure you aren't keeping the leaves too wet. We've been really dry here the last couple of months, so I'm surprised to see your leaves yellowing this early (I have many Chinese elms and not a single one has started to show fall colors...

    The Identification Thread....perhaps?

Looks like trident maple to me, particularly the lack of noticeable teeth on the leaf, and the exfoliating bark strips on the trunk.

Welcome to the site! Could you let us know where you live?

Japanese Elm looks horrible. Advice please...

Just be aware that right now your tree is going into fall dormancy (hence the fall colors). Even in SoCal, elms will go into a dormant period until about mid-Feb. I wouldn't recommend doing anything major until the spring.

    My images are being rotated

I just got a couple of emails about this issue, and after researching it this is a known bug and it will be patched in the next software release. A possible workaround is to use the "insert image" button at the top of the editing window. Do not use the "attach files" button at the bottom of...

The images are there... when uploading them to the site you either need to drag them directly into your post, or if you upload them first you need to insert them into your post as thumbnails or full images. I inserted all of your images as thumbnails in the above posts - if people click on them...

    hinoki sekka issues

I have three of these trees, and have found that they can get weak if their roots are crowded and the inner rootball is compacted with dead roots and broken down soil. Slip-potting does not really work in this instance, because you aren't fixing the underlying problem, and may simply be masking...

Which Am. hornbean would you collect?

I understand - but I was posting what I would do based on experience with different deciduous trees, and you have first-hand experience with this species, so that should take precedence.

Squirrel damage con my new Rain Tree

Two comments: (1) That is a really shallow pot for that tree. You would normally aim for something with the depth equal to 1 1/2 times the diameter of the trunk (as a general guideline). It looks under-potted to me. (2) Every time you repot, you have to gently rake out those roots and remove...

New to Bonsai from the very hot southern California desert

This should not be the case. You have to post at least ten times before you can send a personal/private message, but there is no limit on images. If you try to post an image and it is rejected, would it be possible for you to take a screenshot of the message you receive? I just checked all of...
