I’m headed to the National Bonsai nd Penjing Museum

Here’s the museum event page. It may be a little early for a lot of fall color on the trees but there will be some (or a lot depending on weather) you’ll get to see some Ikebana along with the bonsai and suiseki https://www.bonsai-nbf.org/calendar

New to bonsai, thoughts and comments appreciated.

You don’t say where you are. Fwiw growing this outside in sunlight in the spring and summer (after frost and freeze dangers pass) will double or triple the grow you get. The more un restrained growth on the branches and trunk, the thicker both will get. Typically branches and trunks are left to...

    New entry Zelkova nire

Zelkova nire is Chinese elm. That name is sometimes used by importers to skirt import restrictions and sometime by (or not very knowledgeable sellers. This is a pretty good little tree. Nice structure from what can be seen. Keep an eye on watering. Dont let the soil stay soggy.

While everyone is at The Nationals

The white pine in The next to last photo was given to the collection by Nancy Reagan after President Reagan received it as a gift from a foreign country ( I think it was the King of Morocco as he gave a huge old camellia directly to the collection as well. He was a big bonsai fan and had his own...

    Large oak start

Do NOT cut the roots now. It will weaken the tree. It will NOT really develop new fibrous roots. We have two months (possibly) before the ground cools enough to stop root growth. Cutting roots now will NOT improve survival. It will likely do the opposite. Take it all at once in the spring...

    Large oak start

If you chop it months before digging it up you weaken the tree. If you top it just before digging it up you lose a huge lever that helps get the roots out of the ground (Same hold true for chopping the season before digging it up). having the tall trunk as leverage to help move the trunk up and...

    Large oak start

I would collect it all at once in the spring before bud break. WIllow oak is one of the more collectible eastern oak species. It pretty shallow rooted and a tree that size is definitely collectible. It will be A LOT of digging sawing etc. Try to get the root mass six to eight inches out from...

It it four or five inches above where envision “final height” to avoid die back from. Interfering with plans and leave room for extra places for the tree to bud

    Bonsai Terrarium Project

His famous work is about death and decay 😆 he kills reallly nice bonsai for effect. Not really an example to follow if you want a living bonsai. Most, if not all, of the bonsai he uses are killed (bare-rooted, set loose in orbit etc) https://atmos.earth/azuma-makoto-flower-art-interview/
