Proud father of a blooming Texas ebony!

These were pencil thick 1gal "stick in a pot" from a nursery. 10/12 years ago. The tall one was grown in the ground for 6 years, topped, then boxed up and the other was boxed grown from the beginning. Here in Tucson, they can be grown in the blazing sun and with water grow amazingly fast. I...

    Boojum looking poorly

"Desert" is a very broad term. There is very little online info on growing them, seed, small, big. Like the ocotillo, transplanting large ones is a mixture of horticulture and black magic but the $ makes the attempts seem worth it to some. The boojum are very slow growing and only occur in a...

    Boojum looking poorly

Tucson AZ. I have raised my boojum from a bare root peanut size outside. It has had good seasons and bad. This summer We had a long period of 105 F + and before I noticed it was looking poorly. I brought inside where it has been for 2 months. The new leaves came soon after I brought it in but...

    Palo Verde air layer.

Th This is a PV washed out from an desert river bank. So the trunk/root has been exposed for a season or 2. There are loads of these, I thought next spring I would try and air layer one well down on the root part. Think this will work?

    My latest Pyracantha air layer

I I worked the tree for 5 years on the mother tree starting with a healthy spring shoot. They grow so fast here (shoot will grow 6' + in one summer) a few times it got away from me and there are some thicker branches than i would have liked. I have 2 or 3 in the works about 1/2 the size of this...

From Seed Division: TinyArt’s Texas Ebony Forest

Here in Tucson seedlings of any kind need shade cloth for a year sometimes. Also we have sooooo many Quail that anything tasty is eaten soon as it comes up. Our rains just started but before that we had 6 weeks of 100+ and very low humidity. As you can see I really don't grow "bonsai" hahahaha...

From Seed Division: TinyArt’s Texas Ebony Forest

This is a bit more recent of the tall one, it is about 20 years old from seed. The "Oak" stile is about 15, from seed. Here in Tucson these grow fairly fast with good drainage and lots of water. They volunteer here occasionally, big plants to trees produce tons of seeds, but to ensure...

    Manzanita

This will work. Cut the big radial roots one year (don't ditch) and collect the next. If while positioning the sheet metal under the plant Ya find any big roots STOP. Cut them, back fill and wait another year. Long process but if one wants an older tree this is the only way I have been successful
