Princess Persimmon: Best time to move from grow bed to training pot?

If you took the root cuttings and had reasonable success, then that should give you an idea of when. They can be root pruned fairly aggressive but must stabilized when they are transplanted.

What to do with Low Growth on JBP

@Adair M, I'm glad you posted the last tree because it is the best visual explanation possible. If this tree were grown with small tree technique it would never or at least in the next few hundred years have that proportion. Now if a small tree was the objective, it would would have lost all...

How to sow Arakawa maple seeds from 2019?

13, by all means, do what you've had success with. Field Capacity is a term that separates moist from wet media. When preparing the media for stratifying take a handful and squeeze it tightly. The goal is to have 1 or 2 drops of water come out.. More is too wet and subject to rot. Less possibly...

How to sow Arakawa maple seeds from 2019?

13, older seeds can be tough to get good percentages. the warm stratifying is important! Soak the seeds at least 24hr and put in a container with moist (not wet) media. I use white orchid moss but sand, peat moss or any media that can keep a consistent moisture will work. Place in cabinet...

What to do with Low Growth on JBP

Andy, Dave and Brian made excellent comments about knowing what size tree you want. That dictates how to go about pruning/training.I worked at Telperion on the trees Adair showed and they were grown to be larger trees. Principles are roughly the same for either large or small but there are...

    Time to bud select?

Fred, a picture of the entire tree would help. Sometimes bud selection for the sake of bud selection can be counter productive regardless of season.

Basal dominance physiology as it pertains to bonsai? Vs dwarf varieties?

Like Frank and Wire said, there is too much confusion in trying to “classify” growth tendencies when just observation of a given tree is enough. The genetic diversity in Japanese maples alone is a books worth of study in pruning technique.

    Germinating redbud seeds

Ryan, good results come from warm moist stratification in fall (damp moss in a baggie in cabinet, drawer or top of fridge. 75 days before sowing place in fridge and sow after the cold stratifying.

    Japanese Black Pine "Yatsubusa" pruning

James, one of the biggest problems with yatasbusa is the swelling, faster thickening, of yatsabusa in comparison to the rootstock. There is potential for bulging or reverse taper at the graft union. A very low graft helps with this. Keeping more than a single extension close to the graft will...

Deshojo maple air layer winter protection

J, as Naught has said, you don't have to separate the same year. Your normal winter protection for maples is sufficient. It would help to know where in the world you are. I've done layers that had enough roots in the fall but the quantity or quality wasn't what I wanted. I root pruned those to...

Growing jbp from seed. Advise needed

Dan, either soak them for 24hr or place in a coffee filter and pour a gallon hot water, about 140f, over them before you plant.. I've used both methods and they are equally effective.

JBP trunk chop timing.....conflicting info when researching

As Shibui said, it depends a lot more as to where you chop. How much is cut and how much is left. I personally "chop", prune 4 times a year (not the same tree) early spring before movement, June-July, mid-September and November. Are any of these times better than the others? You Bet! It depends...

    Cutting the buds of pines

I'd like to second BVF on cutting buds. They are the very engine that drives growth! Not just the tip. Not just the root but every meristematic cell in a tree depends on high auxin levels.

    Wiring into grow boxes?

Pa, regardless of where and how any tree is planted, being stable is critical. In the landscape industry even they stake newly planed trees. The reason is, newly established roots are easily damaged! Then, it's starting all over again, for the roots, if the tree is strong enough OR planting a...

    Lowering water PH with vinegar

Mr.Wun, You are not uncommon in this pursuit. Almost all of Ca. has a water "problem". If you choose to use a siphon mixer, use as large a reservoir as possible for concentrate. Make sure you understand the different siphon ratios. All siphons are not equal. Do a little testing. If you are...
