Yeah I'm with you there, the trunk has gone from bright green to mud colored. I keep trying to think of where I went wrong during this winter but I did nothing different from any other. Real bummer, this is my first maple.

Yeah I haven't touched it since I repotted but nothing's changed. I'm just hoping for buds any day now but I highly doubt i'll see any.

Update - this little guy is cooked :/ I decided to remove the bottom right branch and changed what would be my front, all was well until 2 months ago. I repotted the first week of March and was admittedly a bit cavalier with root pruning. It dropped leaves weekly and dropped its last one...

So as of this morning there are still no active buds. All the trees in my neighborhood have all but fully leafed out so I'm a bit worried. I scratched a small part of the trunk and I see green but along other parts and branches it's brown :/ I guess only time will tell?

Nothing I'm afraid. Last Saturday temps on my balcony reached the 70s, the next day it was high 30s so I don't even know what to expect anymore.

Should also mention if it's not glaringly obvious that I'm a newbie and this is my first time working on a deciduous tree. I've only ever had tropicals before this.

My plan for this tree is to reduce in height and grow as a little shohin one day. Is it safe/advisable to prune branches before the spring? I've read about fall pruning once tress enter dormancy but does the same apply to late winter?

The same happened to me the last 2 Februaries with my zelkova and bald cypress, 4-5 days of 50+ degrees followed by a stretch of freezing weather. I was forced to repot both and just kept indoors until about the last week of March when the threat of temps below 40 was just about over. No buds...

Again closing the door will have a minimal effect on humidity, if any. I wouldn't worry about that, just keep it well watered, keep an eye on it and let it do its thing.

In my personal experience I'd advise to not use a humidifier. I tried one once and got mold on every single one of my trees. If you can enclose it in something like a makeshift greenhouse that'll help raise humidity and you can just spray with water. Water in a tray is useless and will do...
