    NYC - Looking for tropicals

I've ordered from Wigerts before and had a good experience but would prefer to not buy blindly if I can help it. Thanks.

    NYC - Looking for tropicals

No, no particular species in mind as long as it's a sub/tropical.

    NYC - Looking for tropicals

Hey Bnuts I'm looking to add 1-3 new tropicals to my collection. If you're in the NYC adjacent-ish area and have any bonsai/pre-bonsai you'd like to part with please message me. If you're outside NYC but are amenable to shipping please message me as well with any trees on offer. Cheers

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

That's exactly the issue I had with this one. The root ball was so dense and root bound that I'd water it, pull it out of the pot to see that only a fraction of the root ball was actually wet. I slip potted early summer but didn't touch the roots. Would dunking the plant in a case like this be...

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

Curious if there are particular cultivars of A. palmatum that are better suited to colder environments?

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

Yeah I'm with you there, the trunk has gone from bright green to mud colored. I keep trying to think of where I went wrong during this winter but I did nothing different from any other. Real bummer, this is my first maple.

Styling Advice On Newly Acquired Premna

Yeah I haven't touched it since I repotted but nothing's changed. I'm just hoping for buds any day now but I highly doubt i'll see any.

Styling Advice On Newly Acquired Premna

Update - this little guy is cooked :/ I decided to remove the bottom right branch and changed what would be my front, all was well until 2 months ago. I repotted the first week of March and was admittedly a bit cavalier with root pruning. It dropped leaves weekly and dropped its last one...

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

So as of this morning there are still no active buds. All the trees in my neighborhood have all but fully leafed out so I'm a bit worried. I scratched a small part of the trunk and I see green but along other parts and branches it's brown :/ I guess only time will tell?

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

Nothing I'm afraid. Last Saturday temps on my balcony reached the 70s, the next day it was high 30s so I don't even know what to expect anymore.

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

I've successfully layered trees before but haven't attempted it on a deciduous. In the future I'll consider it but for now I'd like to learn the nuances of the tree for a couple of seasons first. I'm blown away that people can discern between 2 different species on a graft that's absolutely...

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

That's a very good point I truly hadn't considered that. Spring it is :) Thanks

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

Should also mention if it's not glaringly obvious that I'm a newbie and this is my first time working on a deciduous tree. I've only ever had tropicals before this.

    I Ruined My Kiyohime Maple

My plan for this tree is to reduce in height and grow as a little shohin one day. Is it safe/advisable to prune branches before the spring? I've read about fall pruning once tress enter dormancy but does the same apply to late winter?

    Trees waking up early...

The same happened to me the last 2 Februaries with my zelkova and bald cypress, 4-5 days of 50+ degrees followed by a stretch of freezing weather. I was forced to repot both and just kept indoors until about the last week of March when the threat of temps below 40 was just about over. No buds...

Do species that display fall colors always display them when potted?

That's very interesting thanks all, got my reading cut out for me this weekend.

Damn it. Well there's always next year (maybe). Thanks James.

Do species that display fall colors always display them when potted?

Bit of a stupid question as I'd imagine putting a tree in a pot wouldn't interfere with something like that but I'm certainly no botanist. I only ask because I just realized that over the last 2 seasons, my Zelkova has never displayed any fall colors. As the fall and winter approached, the...

Indoor lighting for winter - Brazilian Rain Tree

Again closing the door will have a minimal effect on humidity, if any. I wouldn't worry about that, just keep it well watered, keep an eye on it and let it do its thing.

Indoor lighting for winter - Brazilian Rain Tree

In my personal experience I'd advise to not use a humidifier. I tried one once and got mold on every single one of my trees. If you can enclose it in something like a makeshift greenhouse that'll help raise humidity and you can just spray with water. Water in a tray is useless and will do...
