Got this Yatsubusa today, and I am very happy with the purchase. However as you can see, there are some spots with inverse taper/knobbing (which is very typical of yatsubusa elms). Obviously I'm thinking air layers, one at the top under at that bulge, and one at the bottom right on that bulge...

I just bought this awesome Japanese maple senkaki (or so the tag reads).
It has an awesome shape with good growth on the lower part of the tree.
I want to layer the trunk above the graft to produce nebari.
And at the same time, removing the not so good looking graft.

I got this tree when I first started bonsai (last summer) from a local nursery. That was before I knew about weird grafts and long boring trunks, so this spring I tried to air layer it. I watched the Graham Potter video a couple times and then went to work. It's fall now and nothing but callous...
Sad story....maybe? I air layered the top off of this plant and then moved it to the corner of the garden. The air layer was spectacular. Our gardener knocked it off the shelf and did not tell me. I noticed it 4 days later and laying down in the pot......it never recovered. Here is the bottom...
