Once again, it started as a cutting:

August 2011 (the cutting was made two or three years before):

The idea was to have a "hokidachi", a broom-style bonsai.

But I realized that it would take me more years than I have left to match the branches with the height and girth of the trunk. So I air-layered it:

July 2014:

(Behind, a jug of "rhum arrangé")

March 2015. I was almost certain the base would push out new buds, but to my dismay, it died! :(

March 2016:

10 July 2016, getting messy:

So I decided to defoliate it and trim it a bit:

Mid-july is the limit here to defoliate maples, but it's been pushing out new leaves, and some buds that I can select later to balance the design.

... For instance, the buds at the base of the branches on the left have no interest, but if I (partially) defoliate again, that is if this time I cut only a portion of the leaves, the buds on the branches inside the tree (like the one on the left) can develop. See what I mean?

Not to shabby but needs surface roots!

I had planned to repot it next spring, or even this autumn, in a deeper pot, on top of a plastic plate or circle or such.

It's been two years since the air-layer was severed, and now is the time to make it thrive, develop the "nebari" and the branches, so it will be (or should be - I'm not retired yet and sometimes I just can't have the time to do the right things at the right time) a clip-and-grow stage next year so it gets stronger, then 2-3 years of refining it, and bingo! Kokufu-ten!

Er,... not even sure about the name, but I have good hopes about this lil' one

That picture from today is just plain beautiful, thanks for posting!

I'm glad you like it, after all we're here to share what we like, learn from each other, and enjoy the world of bonsaï and nature, aren't we?

Oh Lord, I'm being that Christian liberal atheist again!

Joking apart, what I appreciate here is not the way many here interpret the 2nd amendment of your constitution and other issues, it's the way the "tea house" is a place for showing that the 1st amendement enables discussion, even if sometimes I think it gets off the tracks, and I take my responsability for that.

What I like is that we can (at least, you can) put aside what is a bone of contention in other discussions to concentrate on what we like - or don't like - in a civilized way.

Thanks for the friendly words.

A.K. (62, not 47!) :p

I think it looks good, keep up with your ramification work.

Absolutely AK!
Likewise!
The future holds more of this and less of that...

I love ?
Do you know the cultivar?

Maybe I can layer my orange dream and have something remotely similar

Looking good AlainK.
That's about the size give or take a bit that I like.
