4 days and getting ready to push root nubs soon

Chinese Elms seem way faster.Especially if I would of used mother fertilizer.
Expecting dense roots on some of these in about a week.I may keep one indoors all winter to grow through next season!
Chinese Elms can be cool.

3 wks with the chinese elm aeroponic seedling air layers!!!

This is cool....had about 30-50%success.
I upped nutrients and added bio-stimulants to the resevoir to push root growth....extra phosphate too.
I will let these roots get large ,as long as plants do not get deficient......chines elm are greedy feeders and show deficiencies in a hurry....does limit aeroponic success.......but,hey....the strongest ,viable ones make it.....definately some selection sciance going on there!!!
Perhaps a benefit of this method......strongest and quickest rooting, most energetic or best metabolism perhaps......higher antibiotic mechanisms?

Oh well...these roots are going to be masive and very abunadant with feathery side nodes happening😀19B626CA-487D-449B-836F-E4A9120876B3.jpeg67779F8D-311B-4164-B502-D1EFFBD83D98.jpeg299A5930-6356-4921-BB2A-A4D60ABADDB9.jpeg70531C91-BA2C-4F19-A699-FCE1D02A1CE8.jpeg

The future of the nebari on these trees are what dreams are made of.

I wonder if you didn't stick as much thru the insert, would there be fewer roots, or the same, just concentrated into a narrower region, leading to a flatter root ball faster.

Hi.Thanks.
They actually root inside the collar slip frequently and I find myself extending more into resevoir when this occurs.I have decided that initial vigor is my best plan of action in a rootpouch, then next transplant remove bottom 2/3rd or at least at some time.
This is worth the time it seems as most of the pre-rooted seedlings had roots that were quite slim compared to the Pre-Rooted seedling in the above picture.

OK,aeroponic Chinese Elm seedling air-layers 23 days!!

Ok,awesome root density...these should be very vigorous.I will add some extra mono ammonium phosphate for a couple weeks anyway to pump roots first.
One more left in the cloner....be a few more days.
Put into Rootpouch quart pots in a 25% course vermiculite/75% course #2 perlite.
I will grow these extended season through out next year as long as I have room.....unless they seem proper to prune and stick into refridgerator I will be buying to store my very small personal collection in dormancy.C6A9C1BC-A24D-4A92-AAD5-31D6753DAED6.jpeg588D728A-BDE5-4512-ABC4-8102827E91B0.jpeg

Aeroponic Coreana Hornbeam seedling air-layers.

These will have pretty good nebari.I need to cover them up.
The regular seedlings are definately a bit further along with the extra mnth growing.Great color on these.Transitioned very nicely to outdoors.Definately will be storing indoors in small fridge for a very short, but effective dormancy(8 weeks) then start very early indoors to get some real extension.

I've got to say that this doesn't look to be worth the effort. The 'air layer' roots are arrayed along quite a length of stem, whereas, the original (though it is just one example) has all but one or two originating on a plane.

My thinking is that I want roots around the stem on the same plane and that this will make for the best nebari.

Was fun.I like them better than the original tap root.
I believe they grow more vigorous too. Can’t say I am preparing nebari rather than just sinking into a Rootpouch and after dense rooting just remove bottom 2/3..........More interested in extreme vigor at this stage.Nebari would come later I guess.I like this method better as they conform to a Rootpouch more quickly✌️
👍

Aeroponic Chinese Elm update!!!

These have good vigor.Potted 1 mnth ago!Shaped them a couple weeks ago and already removed wire. Two are shaped for raft style and one is a simple curve.
I am letting sacrifice leaders grow away while removing the mid- foliage .Keep lower growth vigorous.
Eventually the rafts will be laid in a proper training pot on there ends to start the raft style.

The Chinese Elms also today into cold storage.

These were sprouting from seed first week of August then aeroponically air-layered....so 3.5 mnths growth we are at now.

Saved three of these.2 will be raft style and one informal upright.

Maybe an early start indoors if I have room.
Rafts will go into a seed tray and laid on end in Spring for proper raft form and let go wild again for thickening. That sounds fun!!!
