Since my family lives in this area, I've become a bit familiar with the trees there. This is a biologically diverse area with literally hundreds of species that could be used for bonsai. Cedar elm, an extremely common tree in this area, is only ONE excellent choice...

Go for it, my man! I think it's great when we start experimenting with the trees indigenous to our part of the world; it fits the spirit of bonsai, and it helps make the art more deeply our own.
