Any idea what’s causing this deformed leaves and holes on my maples?

The past months growth has been having this strange wrinkled and deformed look to it. I’ve been spraying regularly with BT to keep caterpillars away, and insecticidal soap. But it seems to be happening on nearly all my maples. Wondering if anyone’s seen anything like this?

I’m not noticing any bugs on them but there’s a fair bit of damage to them the past few weeks.

I had a few leaves turn out like that when I forgot to put my shade cloth up for week. I think it was from sunburning newly growing leaves, stunting growth.

At least that's what I attributed my issue to. I'd be interested in hearing from a JM afficionado.

Interesting… I’ve not thought of that.

this year I’ve kept the shade cloth off the maples the past two months. We’ve had a LOT of marine layer and on a good day they get morning-noonish sun so I felt like it was safe. I will say they grew much more this year than last year where I kept them in shade/shade cloth all day.

But yeah I’d be interested to hear if anyone else can chime in on that.

Not sun IMHO.
More likely a mild fungal infection or some bug feeding as the buds are opening. It seems to be temporary, only appearing for a couple of weeks in Spring. You should see normal leaf growth return now that it is warming up. I've never treated and it always seems to clear up here.

I've been seeing similar on some of my maples.
It seems to affect about half the leaves. It hasn't been shaded and gets full sun from morning until about 3pm.

Have seen the odd Caterpillar, but I think sun on the second flush is the cause for me.

The first flush is mostly fine.

I'd associate that with a fungal infection.

I would agree with sun damage. I grow them in zone 9b and if you don’t keep the new leaves in total shade they will wrinkle up quickly. They are extremely tender and cannot transpirate enough to stay supple in the heat. I keep them in full shade till they harden off and then in very filtered light. This causes a problem with slightly longer internodes but it keeps them from wrinkling in the heat and bright sunlight.

We stat getting 90 degree heat here in March with over 100 heat index by April. This is Deshojo growing in the shade. Not as bright red as it would in sunlight, but the leaves don’t wrinkle.

Bud damage due to insect or fungus (or even physical damage if the tree has been handled roughly).

Sun / heat damage is typically from the tips inwards, and leaves on the outside of the tree show damage while leaves on the inside of the foliage are fine.

I did spray with copper fungicide about a month back but no results. If anything the damage just continued. Maybe I’ll try a systemic and more shade

almost exclusively seen this type of crinkled growth when over fertilization occurs, especially nitrogen.

Anyone aware of any fungal treatments that are available in the UK? Seems like we banned everything that's commonly recommended.

Cant hurt to try it

Hydrogen peroxide available in the UK? If so, there is an H2O2 mix you can find people talking about on this site. I’ve used it with no issues on my trees as a soak and a spray.

I’m not sure what all it covers, but it’s the cheapest treatment I’ve come across and worth looking into.

They’ve been fertilized with several bio gold pellets each but even on some

interesting. They’ve only been fertilized with bio gold and only a few pellets on small trees. And last application was probably a month-6 weeks ago

I would like to know more about H202 and fungal infection, plus anything else it works on - can anyone post a link to a thread talking about this?
