Hi J,

Where are you located? If you are in the Toronto area, I know that Fred at Hollow Creek (near Rochester) will get phyto for you and you can drive down to get the tree yourself (2 hrs from Toronto). He would probably ship but you can get some good deals by visiting him in person and it is always better to see the tree first. Although keep in mind you would have to go and pick the tree, then come back again (usually a few weeks later) once the USDA inspector has come through.

If you are looking for something specific, drop me a pm or contact me through my website, maybe I can help you out and avoid the border hassle.

Hi

Ya I am in the Toronto Area, I'm looking for some cork bark jbp and maybe 2 jwp for my father's big birthday. I called the CFIA yesterday, and found out the import permit requirement and stuff also about the USDA cert as well. Also found out that if pine seeds are commercially packaged, I don't need a permit to bring them across the border (i.e from California).

Do you have any for grabs?

Sincerely,

J

Hi J,

If you are looking for seeds, check out Misho Bonsai. No issues getting seeds from them. They used to be based in QC but I think operate out of the UK now. They still ship seeds to Canada with no permit requirements.

If you are interested, I have a few hundred JBP seedlings from this year. This would save you the trouble of germinating them yourself. I may also be able to get you some JWP seedlings from my friend who has several thousand. JWP is probably not the best choice for growing from seed, though. American larch seedlings are available as well.

If you want good pine bonsai, that is more difficult. Within Canada your best bet is Gerald at Shikoku Bonsai near Vancouver. He ships, no import required, and I can vouch that his trees and service are excellent. Trees are not the most inexpensive. He has been growing them from seed for decades - but it shows. He has much more available than what is on his website. It would also be worth visiting Fred at Hollow Creek. Call him first. Tell Fred/Gerald that Aaron from Toronto referred you.

If you are looking for a true cork bark JBP, I can't help you. Those have become quite hard to find. I think they have gone out of fashion in Japan and as a result imports have fizzled out. They are all grafted, so almost all are quite funny looking.

I'm not sure when your father's bday is, but if you are relying on phyto from the US, time is definitely not on your side.

Hope that helps.

Hi Aaron,

thank you for the information. I think Seedlings are fine for me, if you can get both JBP or JWP? can you PM the price of them?

So Cork Bark JBP is out of fashion? Darn, I like them alot when i was young and when my father had two at our old home, before we moved to Canada.

Sincerely,

J

Pm sent.
The kokufu books from a couple decades ago had tons of nikishi corkbark jbp. Not so much anymore.

allow me to suggest another Canadian based nursery --- albeit, on the left coast. Tak runs a great operation and can provide robust material in almost any state of development --- from seedling to specimen. give him a call, they have FAR more trees than are displayed on the web catalogue.

A Joy

It's a joy to see folks helping each other without the extra, often uncalled for chatter.
