I collected an Ilex this afternoon after work. I've potted it and cut away what I felt was obvious. I would like some advice before chopping further. Thanks in advance.

Surely you need to wait until it starts to grow before cutting back any more? Some green leaves seems to help most trees grow new roots. I generally give collected trees at least a full growing season to establish good strong roots before starting more work.
After it is growing you can assess which bits are alive and healthy and make better decisions on what shape to pursue.

The root slayer drain spade x with the long blade and handle made short work of digging this 9ft tall clump of holly. It is now my go to digging tool that stays in my truck at all time.

If you can grow well for say two years.
Heal the wounds.
The wood can give problems.
Shibui is correct.
Good Day

* Have one here, guy was so afraid to repot, he killed
the main trunk.
Trying to heal the wounds, thus far a major pain.

Pretty shallow pan there. Is that regular potting soil or is it just mixed in? Be careful moving it much this year in that pan.. the tree needs to be very stable so it can grow roots.

The pan used to be a drain pan for a tile saw and it is pretty rigid. The tree is wired solidly to the pan and is stable. The soil is Napa 8822, pumice, and coconut husk. I also put a thin layer of coconut coir to keep the soil from drying out too fast with the lake breeze I get every day.
