First submission, and a spontaneous one. Material is a Ficus sp. ( nerifolia I think, pot was labeled "Ficus", we'll see), over a shard of broken ceramic.

Background: have been watching this wither at work until last week when they were declared nonsalable, e.g. free to me :)

Rough shape but ficus are really tough. Repotted today, was left with a pretty small rootbase, decided I would finally jump in here. This will be my first ROR attempt ever.20230318_194149.jpg

Secured in a colander:

Chunky mix. They had been overwatered at work; trying to get a bit more 02 in there. I'll update this thread if they make it!

My second entry; a Cotoneaster horizontalis over a piece of black lava.

Did some really hard root work to get it on the rock. We will see. This is my fourth or fifth ever deciduous repot. Hehe20230409_172613.jpg

Put it in a pond basket with the rim of a one gallon acting as a sort of collar; Intent is to keep the roots growing down (collar) and allowing anything below to escape into the basket (vigor and future fine roots for the pot). Idk. I am very new to this...20230409_173805.jpg

Going to leave undisturbed until next spring. Assuming, that is, I didn't just kill this poor guy...

The cotoneaster didnt make it. This was likely a problem with the material; this batch of cotoneaster came in weak and overwatered. Of the ones still on the table at the garden center, only about half look like they'll actually survive. Boooo20230516_114305.jpg

First submission, an unknown Ficus sp. (nerifolia?) is doing well.20230522_154257.jpg

We'll call this #2 because my original #2 died.
Root cutting of what I believe is F. microcarpa (cutting from a ginseng mallsai)

Second #2 didn't make it either. First one is still alive but after months and months of zero growth I realized the colander its in is probably just way too big. Exacavated, found healthy roots, but not nearly enough to justify the container put it into a much more reasonably sized pot, bonus that the rock slips in there perfectly. I'm definitely starting the race with a sprained ankle here 😅20230807_154141.jpg20230807_154143.jpg
