Mine has a terrible bend along its trunk and I need to lop off that top part . I don't know if there is any dormant buds low on the trunk. So what is the best timing to force new buds on the trunk? I'm guessing spring time like now (May in NY)

@Corrado and @Nybonsai12 thanks for the conversation on the cut timing subject.....and providing the link to Brian's post...which contained an additional link to chopping articles. I am highly curious right now. I just chopped trunks of ground-growing Hackberry, Celtis Sinensis, at early Spring for my area. I chopped at bud swell in the earliest stage...the hint of growth to begin start-up. I left the roots alone at this time. Buds on lower branches were left intact are opening well. I am hoping for that explosive growth often described.....I have no idea how long it take to get that growth. Funny....I go out 2-3 times a day checking for new buds....I hope something happens. Soon.

The more you look, the longer it takes!

You’re right I’m sure....I can’t help looking though....it’s an addiction I suppose. I’m quite sure I’m not alone. I’ll feel a lot better about the chop once I begin to see new random buds begin to break out of the trunk.

I’m curious to see the bud break timing on the Ume....which could be somewhat similar to the bud timing of my chopped trees.
