Wellp,

Christmas bonus came through at work and I thought to use a small chunk of it on myself for a Black Hill Spruce that I have been talking to Andy about for 2 years now.
This tree will make a wonderful literati/ tall alpine style tree and I’m excited for the next step in its development. It will join other spruces I have in my collection that will be a part of a lineage of native species that I will shape.

It arrived ! Didn’t have much time for fancy picks cause garage is a mess w stuff I’m working on and I had to run out the door to feed / take my dog out before my hot date ;). But I watered it and will let it settle until spring , I’m gonna slip pot into a larger Tokoname training pot with pumice for a coupe seasons.. this is a Andy smith collected tree his black spruce at National arboretum will serve as inspo .. and I love the tall timber literati aesthetic

Did you get a strong first flush of growth on this one? I have also have a black hills spruce from Andy (a much smaller one) and I love it. I'm interested to see where you will take this tree

I did not get a strong flush of growth this year but no needles fell off and I do see buds all over so hoping next year it’s stronger. Did not lose any needles so there’s that .. for design I have not through too much into it yet incase I get any dieback
