In the spirit of experimentation, I yanked up two pinky sized camphor trees on my morning walk. All I had to dig with was my rather dull walking stick. The roots were literally under the edge of the blacktop. I dug as much as I could and gave a big pull until I heard the roots pop. I was hoping it was the roots and not ME doing the popping! Here they are just as I pulled them. I trimmed most of the leaves off and made clean cuts on the broken roots. I potted them in airy potting mix and will keep them in the shade until I see growth.
No worries about maybe "wasting" a resource. There 50 such trees every 100 feet on the 1 mile stretch of road I walked. There are also dozens of much larger "world class " camphor trees there too. That is, if there is such a thing as a world class camphor tree.
So this is a worse case scenario experiment: late season collection, ripped out and not dug out, no experience with species. About as bad as it gets. We'll see how it works out.
