Chinese Elm - Root over statue cascade.

How big is the statue? Whats it made of? How did you drape the roots? Could be very cool!

The statue is roughly 40cm tall made out of a concrete like material. The roots are draped down the side and front of the belly. I used plastic gladwrap to hold the roots inplace. I will dig up in 6-12 months and re wrap/check on the roots.

Nice! I'd definitely give it a year... It will give the tree time to push its roots. Then you can check and then re-position roots if need be..... and then..... wait another year!

Awesome cheers i have it in a very large tub so im hoping the trunk will thicken up. Im not going to touch it for a year. Down the line i will probably try and cut the trunk, find a new leader etc for taper.

Now this is awesome!

Nice birds BTW

Thank you. The birds(magpie's) are assholes I cant eat food outside without 5-10 of them ambushing me and trying to steal my lunch haha. They are always digging for worms in my growing tubs.

Do you want algae, lichen and moss growing on the statue or are u keeping it 'glossy'.

Brian Van Fleet had a trident maple root over rock project going on a few years ago. I'm not sure what the status is now, but I found the two blog posts he made showing the work. It may help you out.

Right now I don't think your project is going to be very convincing. The bend in the trunk looks very unnatural. A roundabout quote from John Naka:

A cascade should have twists and turns and ups and downs. It should never look like a man’s urine stream; a gradual, even arc falling into the bowl.

(Got that from Adam Lavigne's blog). The initial bend in the trunk of a cascade is usually pretty sharp, not a big arc like yours. I like your idea, but I think that you're trying to force a tree to fit your idea rather than embrace what the tree already is and has the opportunity to be.

Sorry if I sound like a downer. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just offer some alternative criticism. :)

Thanks for the links i will check them out. I couldnt agree more about the big bend at the top that has been bugging me, my idea around this was to just leave it to grow large/attach to the statue. There is a branch at the start of the big arch that i plan to make the new leader down the track and air layer the rest off. Then hopefully make it look more natural etc

Or would it be better to aur layer now and start with the new leader ealier as oppossed to a year from now?

That front root is a perfect "arm".
As if the tree is comforting the statue and the statue is comfortable then, holding the tree.

Nice!

Uh....grow any?

Haha i may dig it up soon to unearth the roots/ repot, and see qho is hugging who under the soil. Its grown a lot in a year.

Love this. I agree with Sorce. the way the tree looks like it's comforting the statue looks fantastic
